First gun

Hey guys, I started spearfishing just a few months ago with a used pole spear purchased from a friend. I live in south Florida and have taken it out numerous times with descent results (I have read up on regulations). The other day my brother gave me a JBL Super Carbine 40" (a gun he paid $20 for at a garage sale) with no tip or bands and a shotty trigger mech. I took it to a local dive shop and ended up spending $130 on a new handle/trig mech, bands, tip, rail and double wrap mono. The trigger/handle is same as the JBL lightning series (upgraded). Do you think this is a lousy investment for a first gun? I've yet to take it out, but was looking for some opinions.
thanks
mike.

Re: First gun

Make sure the mech is good and it's working reliably.

Be safe.

Go get some fish!

Re: First gun

Thanks for the response. It's a brand new mech, so I'm assuming it will be ok. I do have one more question concerning the bands. They set me up with two 5/8" bands, one being 20" and the other 22". I did not load it dry, but attemptemted to pull the bands back to get a feel of it. The second band is VERY difficult to to pull back. Is this normal? Will I just need practice in the water? Is it possible I'm over powering the gun.
Thanks again
Mike

Re: First gun

No, good gun to start with for smaller reef fish ( mangos, smaller grouper and hogs.)
