Cool. Geography is a bit different on your side... I've only got one number marked as a spring out of about 3500 or so in the collection. So, I guess I will keep poking around it until I find out.

Nice fish and bottom finder pic to go with it. All the cuberas off that wreck I posted earlier seem to be in the 30-40lb range, never really encountered one much bigger but there are certainly a lot of them the right time of year.

You may have been in 2 or more rodeos, but I still hate loran conversions. I've had some that were off by way more than 250', and by the time I gave up spinning in circles, it was all that I could do to run my boat back up out of the whirlpool maelstrom that I had created.

We should have converted all our numbers when loran was still transmitting.

Re: Bottom Finder Pics

There are freshwater springs flowing on the EC and most are in close, the holes offshore tend to be sinks.I don't have one in SC.

Think of it as a grown man's Easter egg hunt where the old TD's are saying "warmer"... In my mind, "hunting" starts way before you flip over the side and the search for the spot is part of the fun!

Re: Bottom Finder Pics

There is another solution to converting Loran to GPS. Go buy a Furuno GP32. It has Loran built into it and you can change the offsets. Best thing to do is have a small wreck that you know the original Loran #'s to. Anchor over the top of said wreck and play with the conversion offsets until they match the old Loran numbers, or if your lucky enough to know someone that already has the offsets and will share them with you then your ahead of the game. Trust me it is accurate, Bag Man on here still doesn't know how to use GPS and he can drop me on the same piece of reef every time. He swears its more accurate than old loran. I have the unit on my boat and can find any confirmed number within a minute. I do use Andren for getting me close but I watch the GP32 once I hit the converted #.

Brandon, I did alot of research on the Loran conversion question a year or two ago and arrived at the same solution you did. I eventually did not execute on that solution, but it is good to see you have had such practical success on the water. Good advice, Tony

Re: Bottom Finder Pics

I see it time and again and I just scratch my head as to why people make the fish marks actual fish on the screen. You are losing the ability to learn what is actually under you. In time you can learn what RS, grouper, AJ's etc. mark like and what color they will mark. I mark most of the bottom fish that I catch and a lot of time can send the proper bait to entice them to bite. Ditch the fish icon and learn what is swimming under your boat.

LOL - Brandon, please look at what I posted in previous bottom finder posts on this thread. I pulled up the fish icons for the TV cameras rolling that night. Tony

Offsets change even out of the same port. Using the GP32 and putting the offsets in works for other spots in the same general area. Move 20 miles and you might need to re-calibrate. Software like Andren uses offset tables to compensate for this. You can use the "wreck" technique with Andren as well and make known points, to be calibration points.

But it's not enough to have a small wreck that you have the original Loran numbers to. Loran numbers are only repeatable on the SAME LORAN. So, you would need a wreck documented in the book that you are trying to convert. Two different books could have two different set's of TD's for the same wreck.
