Diving with Squid

Have any of you dove with squid around here? I read a report that just before the storm, the squid were feeding close to shore at Cape Ann. It might be a lot of fun to do a night dive with them while they're here. Of course, I'm thinking of bringing a net as long as it's not a legal problem.

During the summer we see them every time we go on a night dive. Sometimes you can even grab them. A polespear with a parazyler tip works wonders.

True. They are really cool to dive with. They change colors, you can touch them and watch them change colors, one of those Jaques Cousteau moments...

Re: Diving with Squid

I used to catch them all the time in Greece. Tricky to cook though.

Re: Diving with Squid

Sounds like I have to give this a try! I watched a couple of videos and they look really smart. Octopus and cuttlefish are supposed to be really intelligent, and I don't see why squid would be any different. I remember watching a show where scientists watched an octopus solve a puzzle including opening screw-top jars and that sort of thing to get at food. It was pretty remarkable. Cuttlefishes' large brains are attributed to the intelligence required to change color and pattern the way that they do (but I'm sure there's more to it than that).

If the squid are still hitting the north shore, I'm going to try to go out sometime next week. I'm thinking of diving sunset for pollock, warming up for an hour or so, then going back in for squid. If anyone wants to join me, send me a PM.

toptuna - that video is when you need the net! I'm probably going to try polespearing some, but if they are thick (or maybe next spring, when they get REALLY thick) a net would be awesome. Calamari for a year!

those ones were dying though. You can tell by the white spots they had.
