Thinking of hitting Jamestown Saturday am. Any reports? Are the bass still straggling around?

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Last trip of the year,
Dive buddy and I drove down from MA to Sakonnet, Monday 10/21. Clear, sunny 60 degrees with 10 knots topside. Vis was 8 feet. Water is getting cold, maybe 60. Lot's of jellies. I wear crap wetsuits and had a cold, so only lasted 3hrs, not counting the kayak. As this was a meat trip, I started out with my trusty peashooter, a biller 32. Took 2 15" male Groupies and a 16" tautog. Switched to the pole and managed a 20.5" tautog. I was getting way too cold to keep going with the pole, so I hit another 17" with the pistol on the way out and then shivered back to shore. Mixed bag of a dive. Saw several proper sized tautog, but they were being particularly wylie that day. My buddy pounded a 23" tog in the shoulder with the pole, though it tore itself off. Have a good estimate on the size as I saw the wounded soldier cruising around later. With out a slip tip, stronger fish can lever themselves off the pole sometimes. Glad to get some BSB's, they are the coolest fish in the ocean, but disappointed the big fillets got away. |

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
I cant tell you whats in the lower bay but the upper bay (providence/barrington) is holding lots and lots of mid 30" bass. You should still have a great chance throughout the bay for a couple more weeks.

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Real nice shore dive this morning in the mouth of the West Passage, RI. Blackfish and bass. Great visibility. Then it started blowing 25 kts and I headed in.

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
A good Rhody shore dive this morning. Saw one keeper bass that I passed on and shot 4 good blackfish. Everything in 8 feet of water. Not loads of fish but I knew at least a few would be there. Good visibility.

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Im thinking of heading up to RI this weekend from NJ. Is the forecast hard north wind good for viz? The swell will be bigger for a couple of days so I'll try more protected coves and bays on those days. Any thoughts? Is it worth the trip?

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
They got a gale forecasted for friday, winds up to 40 kts out of the SW. Seas for Rhode Island Sound will run 6 to 9 feet. I'd say that Saturday is out, even up the Bay. Sunday may be doable but I highly doubt it. Check the marine weather tomorrow and maybe they'll down-grade Friday's gale. If they don't I wouldn't bother coming up here.

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
thanks! that helps. looks like it's going to calm down monday or tuesday so I may try those days. I'm guessing an offsore wind is favorible for vis?

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Yes, offshore breeze is better than on shore, though no breeze is what you want.
I would have gone this weekend if not for the swell and wind forecast. |

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Dived in Newport at dusk today. Couldn't see tip of my gun. I imagine it would take a day or two to clear up.

Re: Daily Vis Report Thread
Went to pt Judith yesterday. Couldn't see my arm stretched out. Heavy particulate in the water.
