In need of a gun
I have been using a pole spear for a while now, and I'm looking to upgrade to a speargun. I live in Jupiter Florida, so I'm mainly freediving 20-40 ft reefs or rocks. I'm getting snapper and mackerel and hogfish, through research I think the best gun for me would be a JBL Lightning 22. Anybody agree/disagree on my choice and why? Thanks

Re: In need of a gun
Mako's predator pro is a great beginner gun with great durability and excellent customer service. I started with a 100cm doing what you described 20-40ft and it served me well and still does till this day when I'm hunting the shallower reefs. Their a little more then the JbL's but waaay better and more accurate IMO

Re: In need of a gun
That equates to a 140 cm gun which is pretty big for reef hunting. That's more of a bluewater sized gun. I shoot 120 or 130 cm Mako's. The smallest size gun you'd want for freediving Jupiter is a 110. If I could only have 1 gun, it'd be a 120.

Its way too big for what you need - when you are starting out start with a gun that is fit for purpose and can be managed. I'd start with a 90cm - 1m gun that's light and highly maneuverable ideally 1 rubber and learn to stalk. Once you've mastered that then get a second bigger gun for bluewater stuff

Re: In need of a gun
Definitely at least a 48. You'll 1get frustrated with a gun under a 42 for most stuff.

Re: In need of a gun
big gun for what you want to do, too much power in fact. 90-120 rob allen and youll be all set for a solid gun that will last you a lifetime. mako handles arent comfortable to shoot with after a long time, oversized grip in my opinion having shot them for the last 4 years and moved on to other guns like RA's. JBL's new wood guns are an affordable and good option as well for you if you want a wood gun.

Re: In need of a gun
I went ahead and got the JBL Lightning 24. It's 48 inches and comes stock one band but has the ability to be double banded for the future. Thanks for everyone's inputs and help!

Re: In need of a gun
Good start! everyone has to start somewhere and find something that fits their budget. keep the 1 band for now and get used to using it.
