Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

A friend of mine dove 55 to 65’ depths SW of Cedar Key on Saturday. They crushed em’ with a limit of Gags, ARS, and Hogfish. Also have a few Scamp and a dozen nice Go’s. Vis was 30’ plus. Dodged storms all day but managed to avoid the downpours. Nice to see all those nice ARS in that shallow water.

Any observations about viz and diving conditions since DBrown's last post on 7/3?

That sounds pretty good given all the rain we have had. How was the fish and gumbo situation?

Out of St Pete in 90' viz was 12 foot on 7/9/22. One dive opened up to 20, but overall shitty. Some gumbo. Not bad. Temp 86 degrees. Got some nice fish. Gags were tough due to viz and they move fast in these warm temps.

Am sure all the rain run off isn't helping either.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out of Clearwater 7/16/22
Viz in 95' was 45 feet. 86 degrees
Viz in 83' was about 25 foot. More particulate. Some gumbo in both. Not much. Still 86 degrees.
Saw my first Tiger shark in the Gulf of Mexico. We were all back in the boat and it came cruising by. A diver had come up from the dive stating a gag had shook shaft and he couldn't recover the fish. Shark was about 8'-9'.
Another friend of mine said he saw one S on Friday out of St Pete.
Only other one I have seen was in Keys fishing at a hump after I reeled up what was left of an AJ. It was a big one. We said to ourselves,"Wow, that had to be a big shark to eat that AJ." It magically appeared behind the transom. It was broader than our beam. Sooo, we got to see the big shark that ate it.

Dove Masthead Ledge off of Clearwater on Sat. Viz was 10-15 ft in 58 fsw. Water was an unusual greenish-grey color. No gumbo though. Decided to scrap the 2nd dive and headed back to port.

After the SPO on Saturday, you'll get plenty of reports. Not all of us diving tomorrow are in the SPO. A few weeks ago diving near Tarpon. The vis was decent and shoot able. That's the best I can tell you.

Thanks Sharpshooter. Let's hope we get some good posts! Viz has been very disappointing so far this summer!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Two dives today, completely different viz. Dive 1 about 65ft 22 miles west of Anclote. Viz very poor, 10-12 ft at best. Seemed like night when a cloud passed over. Dive 2 about 2.5 miles west of the north end of Honeymoon Island. Top to bottom viz in 25 ft. Seemed like diving in the keys. Lots of marine life and many undersize hogs. Can't explain why further out continues to be so bad. Dbrown's post and video about their dive on the MG on Sat 8/20 showed poor viz on MG as well. Anyone care to offer an opinion?

Just seems like normal summer time diving to me. Lots of fresh water from rain and also runoff. Rivers are dumping tannic brown water into the gulf. Seems like the nearshore stuff isn’t affected as bad as the offshore though
