questions about bug diving

So I have been bug diving for a handful of years now, mostly all around northern SB and i thought I had it figured out but appartenly not. Its time to up my knowledge as I have a baby and my time is more than cut in half. So when I do have time I need to analyze the conditions to see if its worth the drive fromSLO. Ive gone out a few times this year, one week with a couple dives, first was no waves/wind, low tide, good viz and lots of bugs. The next dive in the next week was no waves/wind, high tide, totally murky and zero. I was surprised to see such differning viz with nearly same conditions except for moon phase.SO my questions/thoughts are:
1. what are the most important factors in a shore dive for bugs?
2. When do the smallest tides occur during the month and or during bug season and is this the best time for best viz?
3. what tide is best for lobster as ive heard they like current
4. how much does moon phase matter for the crawl
5 do lobster return to their holes most/ or every night after leaving or do they continue to move and find new holes
6 how often does one dive spot change with regards to the amount/mix of llobster in there ( if i dive a spot I know has great structure and habitat, see not much, is it worth diving again and if so how long to wait)
7. at what depth do you spend most of your time?

I know theres a lot of good divers here and I appreciate the info.

Re: questions about bug diving

i'm by no means any expert but here are a few thoughts. vis relates mostly to swell and plankton blooms so keep an eye on the surf report and chloro charts. vis is generally better on an incoming tide, likewise bugs crawl better with tide movement and incoming I feel a little better. a lot of people don't like any moon but i haven't noticed a big difference. bugs move around, especially the smaller ones but good holes hold bugs consistently in the same part of the year. generally they are shallower early and move deeper as the winter storms move in but I've found exceptions to that. i start working shallower and head deeper until i start seeing a good amount and then work that depth. if you are freediving, working for bugs deeper than 20ft is exhausting. its not like diving fish, you are up and down non stop and get tired quick. a spot can appear to change in hours. sometimes they are so deep in their holes you barely see anything and then a few hours later they are crawling and the place looks night and day.

Re: questions about bug diving

Full moon they seem to hole up more and be out less

Depth, varies. Used think early season they were shallow and went deep with swell and rain but the last few years have not been normal.

Tides, get a ride chart.

Can't say I have noticed any difference in bugs being out at low vs high.

Bad viz bugs are out more.

Bugs move around from shallow to deep and from spot to spot. Yes worth diving a spot with good structure if it wasn't holding once. Next time could be a gold mine.
