Ruined a good salmon dinner
Shot this ling yesterday with Don-B. Saw after I shot it that there was a fish in its mouth that turned out to be a salmon. Spear went through the ling and the salmon. Got a 2fer.

Well, that's hard to top! That technique kept the salmon from becoming dislodged.

Wow!
Is it legal to spear salmon? If not, it would be hard for a game warden to make a case if you left the salmon in the ling with spear through both, but I suppose some would try it. |

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Mike that is AWESOME. Shoulda eaten the salmon.
Yeah Bill, it is illegal to shoot salmon in Oregon and Washington, regardless of whether you are in the ocean or not. Totally unfair. |

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Now that is cool. Interesting it swallowed it tail first. Same as the flounder in one from last week.

Amazing! What are the chances of that?

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
How long were the ling and salmon? Fish are total carnivores, flyfishing I once caught a 11" trout with 3" trout in it's gullet almost a 3rd of it's length

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Ling was a smaller one, just over 24" (always look bigger underwater) there where slim pickings. Salmon was about 12" and was still plenty alive. I almost considered eating the salmon at first but after pulling it out of the stomach I just couldn't do it.

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Very strange that they both were swallowing the salmon tail first. I thought they would always manipulate them to swallow head first.
I don't think a black rockfish would go down too well tail first with its dorsal spines and all, but salmon don't have that aggressive of spines, so I guess it must work for the lings.

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Maybe they have to chase it down as it swims by and take it how they can get it.

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
Probably. And then maybe they hold it in their mouth until it dies, and then turn it around and swallow it. I am sure they have it all figured out.

Re: Ruined a good salmon dinner
That makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, the first one of Macdiver's was well down into the stomach for the spear to go through both fish... Max, you're probably right about them being able to do it with salmon because of their soft spines.

This one was a little too far gone to try for dinner.
