1st WSB
After 2.5 years of spearfishing, I finally spotted a WSB, and proudly brought it home!
Funny enough it was on the 2017 lobster season opener. Beautiful conditions out there and the ocean was teaming with life. I kicked out about 200-300 yards, and was in about 40 feet of water. I had already taken a small (but legal) calico on the inside, and kinda thinking what am i doing shooting small fish, i need to be patient and not scare the bigger guys off. So after a dive to the bottom, I felt at ~20-30 feet that the ocean was super alive and electric. I went up and breathed up fully, then went down to 30 feet and was perfectly neutrally buoyant. I stopped to look around, and ~10feet above me, maybe 25 feet away was nice WSB. I then tried to cut off the angle in which it was heading, and luckily had a few thin strands of kelp to help hide me. When i was about 15 feet away I was thinking I need to pull the trigger now, or risk spooking the fish. It was probably a risky shot distance wise with my 120 Riffe Euro X. I took the shot from beneath it and the arrow entered just behind its gills. I could tell it didn't fully penetrate the fish but luckily i had just switched out the flopper shaft for a slip tip. The fish took off for the bottom and i put the bands around my arm, and grabbed the float line and started kicking for the top. It was pulling, but i was determined to not give it to much room to run and tie up. I got to the top and pulled it in slowly praying it wouldn't tear off. I went in for the bear hug and it flopped out of my arms, but still attached to the spear. The second attempt i got it in my arms and grabbed the gills with all my might. I then let out a war cry and put the knife in, and ripped out the gills. I swam in with the fish and was so thankfully and proceeded to call all the homies for fish tacos and beer and Tequila later that night. Despite all the gear lost this year, and times getting skunked, it is all worth it, and can't wait to get out and look for some more. Last edited by Olibaba; 10-02-2017 at 08:50 PM. |

Nice fish, great write-up. And a great reminder that a slip-tip can make the difference.
