Sonoma County report

Dove in sonoma county yesterday. Waves were very small (as predicted). Water is very warm, felt like 60 or so on top. Bloom is definitely going on, vis was mediocre but diveable. Maybe 6 feet on the surface, but opening up to 8 to 10 below.

Shot a few fish, got a few abalone, nothing spectacular in either category. I continue to see lots of urchin barrens in areas that were thick with kelp in previous summers. I wonder if it is part of a natural cycle and we'll have more kelp in a few years and fewer urchins again, or if this is a long-term trend.

Mendo was about the same. Swell was as low as I've ever seen it up there, made getting around pretty awesome. That bloom was pretty thick, barely diveable in some areas but decent in others. Either way, it fishy everywhere I went.

Re: Sonoma County report

I dove yesterday the 6th at ocean cove. It's been probably 4 years since ab diving. I pulled my 3 from the north side of the outer edge of the cove. For me personally the day was to get back into the water, get more comfortable, and if possible grab an ab or 3.
After cleaning the three the smallest of the 3 doesn't look healthy. The meat looks kinda brown/green. I don't think that one was healthy. I'm not gonna eat it. Oh well. I gifted one to my old boss since he always asks about abalone.
I think I also confused an undersized ling for a pretty good size cabezone. Which I didn't have enough time to grab my gun for.
The swells were within 8 seconds not too high. Surge was wicked but that usually doesn't affect me.
All in all a fun day.

One of my first abs had that same color you described. I ate it and didn't notice any difference. Not sure what causes that, I figured it was just in the cooler on ice getting pissed off all the way home. Maybe the between all the abs and fish in the cooler, bit gnarly water, it just turned color. It was a smaller ab too, maybe an 8.

I like that you thought it was tainted so you gave it to an old boss haha!
