Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

that pic shown just might have been the same radon heading north on I5.

it looked alot more faded, and I don't remember the flybridge, but I was
mainly looking at the main cabin/front windshield angles....

someday, just someday I'll have a nice ocean going rig.........

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

Late last week, Nate finally tidied up all the details and it was time for the 'Maiden Launch' of his heavily customized/re-configured panga, the F/V Jolly Rancher. He hasn't been on it full time, as travel and commercial diving has forced him to divide up his attention span to this boat over a period of almost two years, but it's all over now and she left Anderson's after a soapy bath at long last on a hot, humid day and headed for the harbor. Lots of guys have been questioning me about this boat and how she'd turned out, so I thought I'd post up some photos.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

There's tons of trick little details that are built into this boat.........but you almost have to be walking around it listening to Nate to fully 'get' all the thought, expertise, and love that's gone into this thing. He'll primarily be diving sea cucumbers with the boat, and it's all oriented towards that end, with the odd surf trip I'm sure scheduled on lay days...The pump that you see is totally custom and will be used for re-filling his tanks when out on diving trips. You can see the cushions up there in the vee berth? Nate's girlfriend Erika had some guy in E. LA make them up for only $250, and they look super good to me. When he has his 'starboard' plates in, covering up the well where he stands to drive the boat, that will extend the sleeping area to a little over
eight feet long, so there's plenty of room up in there to camp out comfortably on multi day dive or surf trips...

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

continuing- They performed the traditional 'christening' before a crowd of their close friends who have all watched this project progress from its inception, and loaded up and headed out. Ed and Bill were down in Ed's Greenough 21, so we used that as the chase boat and to swap various guys in and out off of the Jolly Rancher so everyone could get a turn...

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

Continuing- The boat ran fantastic, and performed as expected. There's still some tweaking to do on the prop, the motor had to be babied a bit since it wasn't broken in fully yet, and there'll always be some little details that will need finessing. That said, it was a spectacular success, and Nate couldn't have been happier. Nate thought that it was lighter if anything than the original boat before the 'tear down', and at the end of the day, he related that it ran and felt pretty much like before, but with a lot more weather protection and usability for it's new intended purpose. With the expert guidance of Bill, Ed, Johnny, Sylvester, Carlos, and Woody, Nate dug into this thing with an admirable gusto and attention to detail, and he should really feel proud of how well a total re-work project of this magnitude turned out.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I saw this lil boat taking it's sea trials out that day.Looks like another great project turned out by the Anderson Crew!

Looks like the boat was performing well.

Hope your buddy slays lots of fish, picks lots of urchin, and catches tons of waves off it! Stoked for him!

Scott's Greenough 17 is down to the last rigging phase.....shouldn't be long now. Mr. Bear is tied up there to supervise the last minute details...

Yes it is...

Nate, what thickness ply did you use on your pilot house? I have been thinking of and waffling on adding one to my panga. It will never look as sweet as yours, but I'm getting ready to pull the trigger and begin.

my pilot house will not be as extensive. no cuddy cabin. I'm thinking 3/8, but I have to check a few things.

thanks,
Louis

the lower portion of the cabin (the cuddy part, below the windows) is 3/8". That saved weight and allowed the cabin to be bent to shape. Really strong once glassed, even though its only a single 1.5 oz matte on the inside and a matte/cloth on the outside. the windows are 5/8" plywood (you need more stiffness there to hold and seal the windows in place).

Thanks Nate. I didn't think about the extra stiffness needed for windows.
