Re: future blue water gun!!!

that is going to be one beautiful gun. I just finished mine and will be posting pics tomorrow. I used african beli and purpleheart.... make sure your bits and blades are sharp because the purpleheart will dull them quickly. looks like a great stock though.

Might be cheaper to pay for the blades and bits!

Hey where can I order the wood to make my gun? Everytime I find teak is 48 or 50 inches.

It's easy, just buy a case of beer or two, show up at ken's and shoot the shit for a day or three - before you know it yuo will have a hangover and a new gun.

Re: future blue water gun!!!

Bad news guys...things arent quite going as planned and I am going to have some fixing to do before i get any farther on this project.

I was having this guy help me who makes furniture and things like that, so I figured he would be a great help to me. Well I thought wrong, he kept putting helping me off untill this tuesday. So I got there and he thought we should do the trigger pocket first, and I thought we should have dont the track first. But being the smart 20 year old that I am, I decided I should listen to the wiser, smarter, old furniture maker. So we did the trigger pocket which is ugly as hell because according to the furniture maker "a router cant handle purpleheart" and we drilled it out. Ok I thought its not the best but the trigger fits in there.

Then he wanted to do the track but didnt have the correct router bit and again, "the router couldnt handle it anyway" so he assured me that he could do it with the table saw. Well I decided to listen again since he has been woodworking for 40+ years and I have had less than 6 months experience. Boy that was a mistake...the track is way off target with the trigger pocket now, and the table saw didnt do the correct angles at all. The track is also kindof jaged as well

After that I told him thanks for the help but I think Im gunna finish at home. So today I tried my best to fix some of the problems. I took a 3/4 in router bit and just made a big slot for the track to fit in and im gunna use clear coat epoxy to fill in the gaps on each side of the UHMW track. I also tried my best to chissel out the trigger pocket so it would line up with the track.

All in all I am VERY DISSAPOINTED and wish I would have done it on my own from the gitgo, but I think I will be able to hide most of the mistakes with the trigger pocket. But heres what I got soo far..

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. Its hard not to trust someone that should have more experience than you. I would have made the same mistake.

Re: future blue water gun!!!

I paid a guy who was some master carpenter to straighten my laminated stock in La Jolla several years back and it came back and I swear had twice as much bow to it. I guess the concept of straight is different for everyone. I still have troubles straightening warped blanks. I feel your frustration....I routinely gauge up my own projects for one reason or another. It sucks but you learn how to fix stuff pretty good!

John:

Sorry to hear about the problems. I have no doubt that when you finish the gun it is going to be extremely deadly. You can take your frustration out on some big fish.
