Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
Received the handle and ATI grip today. Great service and awesome quality. The machining and anodizing is a bargain for the price.
Jeff, I hope you continue to carry the handles. They are an outstanding product for both custom and commercial spearguns! I should be ordering another one with the hogue grip in the next 2-3 weeks (2 guns in the works) Matt

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
Bill, I have yet to put the hogue in my hand, but if you look in the pics, there's deep finger grooves in the ATI grip and it is solid plastic. The hogue grip has less defined finger grooves and I believe a rubber overmold. I believe there' a few guys more familiar with the AR-15 firearm family of grips monitoring this thread. Hopefully they can chime in. Maybe you could purchase the handle and locate a shop that carries different AR-15 grips?

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
I prefer the Hogue grip. I don't like being forced to put my fingers in the predefined grooves on the ATI and the rubber on the Hogue grip is comfy.

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
One question. If you have to drill new holes that don't angle in like the stock set up on a Wong, what do you do with the old holes? Fill them with wood caulking?
Are the holes in the new handle lined up right over the old holes drilled in the stock? |

I also liked the A2, which is apparently the cheapest at only $7. It had about the same angle as the ATI and was very comfortable in my hand. Of course I haven't been diving with any of them, so these are just first impressions. Last edited by Bill McIntyre; 10-16-2010 at 03:44 PM. |

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
Didn't even think about the angle. My only experience has been on ARs, need to check that. Good call

Also, Bill took some measurements on a couple of his guns, and I think I have a minor modification that should accomodate the staples that the Wong guns use to retain the pushrod. I've got one of these in the mail to make sure that it will fit. If it works out, then I can cut this pocket for anyone who needs it, and will include it on any future batches of handles. jdd@eatel.net Last edited by Tin Man; 10-16-2010 at 08:21 PM. |

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
Bill checked out my modified handle frame on a few different Wong guns, and so far it looks like the pocket will provide clearance for the push rod staple. If you want to double check on your gun, this pocket should work for staples that are 1-1/8" to 1-5/8" from the rear end of the handle.
So the only modification to the gun would be for the two rear handle screws, which are straight on mine, instead of angled. |

Re: AR-15 style speargun handles
A few people have asked how much the aluminum AR-15 handle frame would affect the ballast of a gun, so I did a quick test. I suspended each handle from a scale while the handle was submerged in a bucket of fresh water.
The Wong handle sinks, but wouldn't even register on the scale. The aluminum handle frame with the A2 grip weighed 1.8 oz. The same frame with a Hogue grip weighed 2.2 oz. And the frame with the ATI Strikeforce grip weighed 3.0 oz. So depending on the particular grip used, the handle would add 2-3 oz. of effective weight to the gun. Saltwater has a slightly higher density, of course, but I think it would only change the numbers by about 3%. |
