Custom Knife Sheath
I've been meaning to post this picture for awhile, in case it helps anyone. I've never found a knife sheath I like. I don't like when the knife handle sticks out and makes a place that your spearfishing line can get hung up in, especially when you're hunting bluewater fish. And I wanted it to be low-profile and tight enough that the knife won't drop out, and I wanted to be able to use one hand when pulling it in/out, and I wanted it to fit any brand of knife I bought.
So.....I had one custom made by someone that makes boat tops and canvas. He also makes a fin holder for boats, so I thought he might be willing to make a custom knife holder. I've been using it for a year, and I just love it! I like to wear it on the inside of my left calf. It's a simple design if you have access to a sewing machine. If not, come to The Blue Wild, and he will have a couple for sale at the Fin Holder booth. I don't know what he's charging, but mine is a year old and looks like it will last forever. The one on the right is my old one, and the one on the left is his new and improved design that he decided to make for the Expo. To be clear, I'm not getting a commission or anything, just sharing about a great product. |

Re: Custom Knife Sheath
I make something similar out of 2" nylon webbing used for scuba harnesses. Both top and bottom have a loop for either bungee or knife straps. It's a couple dollars in material and you can use mono for sewing or use a good thick nylon thread. Use a pair vice grips and a heavy duty needle made for jeans, or buy a sewing awl.

Re: Custom Knife Sheath
FreediveCA, he said the black material is vinyl that is used in the trucking industry, so it's very durable and has withstood the test of time without degrading. And he sandwiched some layers of eisenglass on the inside. The pocket size is perfect and holds the knife very securely just by friction, but I can still pull it out with one hand. Sounds silly, but I am in love with my knife sheath after searching for so long.
John, with Fin Holder, doesn't really plan on making them as a product -- probably not worth his time, but I talked him into making a few for The Blue Wild. Acteg, I tried sewing my own -- I was that desperate, but I couldn't find the right materials and it didn't turn out the way I wanted. Anyway, it's great to finally get exactly what I wanted! |
