White Margate
My largest white margate shot to date. Shot on a barge off of Tavernier on Christmas day.
It's not something I normally shoot, but the fish were thin and I know someone that likes to eat them. The white margate weighed in at 8lbs gutted.

A grunt by any other name would still taste the same. It's amazing how little meat you get from a margate.

nice margate bro. is that what this one is? it kinda looks the same but that mouth looks a little different. shot this off boca grande. wasnt exactly sure what it was, but looked big and edible. i dont normally shot fish i cant identify but basically looks like some type of grunt so i wasnt too concerned. it sure tasted good, very white when cooked and mild.

Looks like the same fish. I am not positive. Maybe one of the pros could help out who see them more often than I do?
As long as you cut out the bloodline in one that big they are pretty tasty. You are right Brian...they are pretty boney for one that size, but got some nice size filets.

White margate is pretty good eating. You might as well call it "white snapper". Most people wouldn't know the difference with the true snappers. BTW, when I give snapper away to people that don't know about fish I always tell them it is "red snapper". Terms like "mutton", "dog", "cubera". "mangrove" tend to confuse people. Have you also noticed how you never see "gag grouper" on the menu. It is always "florida grouper"...
