Looking Forward into 2023

...Long range forecasting is always an iffy proposition...but, it looks like we have a possible strong el nino occurring by mid-year. That would extend the big game season late into December once again and bring exotics far north.
...Lots of squid appearing at Catalina and out as far as Tanner Bank. Bluefin to 65 lbs. still biting on Tanner at the high spot and some on Cortez Bank.
...We metered some white seabass over squid beds at Empire Landing while hooping for lobster two weeks ago. Find the squid and you will probably find some early season gamefish...

Re: Looking Forward into 2023

A word of caution: Diving in the middle of concentrated squid is ill-advised. Like diving near a seal beach, you could end up with an apex predator on your tail. Both my shark encounters involved squid or seals...
...At Church Rock, a seal rookery was on the beach when my Great White confrontation occurred. Feeding on seals cost the fish it's life. The next day, commercial fishermen passing by on a swordfish boat saw the shark chasing seals across the surface. One went out onto the 30' plank and harpooned the fish. Five hours later and with all their gear out, the shark was landed. At the 40 Thieves dock, the fish weighed in at 2800 pounds and measured out at 16 1/2 feet. In it's stomach was 300 pounds of seal meat. The positive side is; I wasn't there...
...A mile off Santa Cruz island, while exploring blue water, the 9' Blue attacked, coming straight up for me. It and other Blues were down deep feeding on squid. While F&G was weighing and measuring my shark, about 30 pounds of squid dropped out of it's throat onto the dock.
...Tom Murray described a spooky situation when he swam into a mass of squid at Catalina. As he looked for white sea bass, good size sharks shot thru the pod next to him, up close and personal...Wisely, he shifted his efforts elsewhere...Moral: Discretion is the better part of valor...
