Re: cabo in shore report

Yes it is. Good guy. I have meaning to get down that way for years. I used to sell dive travel and he was always the go to guy. He offered me a bunch of free fishing and diving if I ever came down. Just curious if you knew him. I have been trying to get in touch with him again.

Re: cabo in shore report

It's been awhile since I've jumped in the water. Green water and a vacation has kept me away. I went out with my good dive buddy Cris, who's still recuperating from back surgery. He's getting better but I still need to load his gun for him. He told me that from his checkout spot he was watching sierra attack bait in the early morning and judging from what I've seen on the fish tables I believed him. However, being creatures of habit we go to the spot that we are familiar with and see it's clear but green. Having low expectation I casually mention to him that goat fish are supposed to be good table fare.
We get down to the waters edge and look around and see what an unreal day it is. The air was in the 80's and no wind. We get in the water and it felt like lo 70's. The bummer was the damn green water. It was like swimming in a bottle of listerine that instead of gargling and spitting it into the sink you spit it back into the bottle, listerine green back wash.
We didn't see much, but we did come accross the school of resident goat fish and I watched Cris take aim and nail one. A little later I found a lone Jack Cravalle and bieng a trigger happy at that point I shot him. I gave him away to some friends that take care of one of the beach houses where we enter. They recipricated by loading us up with beers. We took the goat fish back to Cris's house and fried it up and made three fish tacos each. It was real good. We would have never thought,,,, mexican goat fish, the other white meat.

Re: cabo in shore report

You live in Cabo and go on vacation? What is that all about? Should have taken a gun with you over there. Chris looks happy for having surgery. Beer will do that to you.....

He was just really happy to get in the water. While I was gone he went for a dive. Since he didn't want to test his back, he asked the gardener at that house to load his gun for him before he went in,,,, I know, you're not supposed to do that but he's a rebel.
By the way, who's that freaky looking dickhead in your avatar,, he looks like he's about ready to croak.

Steve!

Dude should croak. He is the guy who guards the children's pool in La Jolla. Long story. Stupid ending. If Chris can't load his gun, isn't that a sign he shouldn't be spearfishing? Not questioning a rebels cause, but jeeeesh......

Re: cabo in shore report

Today Cris was able to load his own gun. We got out early and got into some deeper, green, 72 degree water. Cris got a cabrilla and I got a yellow snapper.

Re: cabo in shore report

All the negative press about narcos and swine flu has had quite an effect on the economy down here. Lot's of people cancelling there vacations. My buddy's house on the beach has had cancellations also, which works out well for me. Not only did I go for a dive today, I also watched the lakers win and the celtics lose. Unfortunately, in shore diving conditions suck right now. Cold, green water has made it's way into the sea of cotez. We even had fog all day yesterday. As a result of the cold water, all the good coveted fish leave. Knowing this and not having any more fish in the fridge, it didn't take much to convice myself to lower my standards and just get some fresh fish.
I was hoping for a stringer of mexican goat fish, look downs or triggers, however, vis was so bad, 7 feet, that all I could find were parrot fish. I chose a smaller one over a bigger so I wont have to force myself to eat it if it's no good.
The fillets look nice but as I was cleaning it, it had a funny smell. I think I'll play it safe and make a batch of ceviche.

I've heard it's good and I've seen the fillets in some of the local fish markets. I'll just ignore that funny smell.

Re: cabo in shore report

I fried up the parrot fish, ate some of it that way and made salad out of the rest of it. It was good.
I was expecting the same conditions as my last post but when I got in the water I could see the vis was a little better. Green water but maybe 10 to 15 of vis. Water was about 70, kinda on the cold side.
I started swimming my normal route, close to the rocks, and noticed schools of parrot fish of all different kinds and colors. Resisting the urge to cull the herd I kept swimming. I came accross chubs and grunts and a big school of Mexy goat fish that were carpeting the ocean floor. I saw a good size jack crevalle that seemed to be keeping all the other fish kind of jumpy.
I swam out into deeper water and was surprised to see alot of life. Then, through the green murk I see a scared up face of a pargo. Then I see a good size cabrilla hidding in a crevass. Each time I would see them my gun was not pointed in the right direction and when I slowly got into position they would casually disapear into the murk. They were teasing me. I did get a shot off at a lone sierra but missed.
I started swimming to the beach to go look for lobster when all of a sudden I'm in the middle of a big school of amber/almaco jacks. I fired at the closest one. I hit it high and thought it would rip out. I let it take line and started swimming fast to keep up with it. Right about the time both my calves started cramping up I realized how many fish were in the school, somewhere between 50 and 100. What a sight. My fish tired out and got hung up on the bottom. I tried to dive down but I was too excited and too out of breath. Luckily my cable came lose from the rocky bottom and I slowly pulled him in.
I'd like to go see if that school is there tomorrow. This could be the start of all the action.
