Dusky Project

I can't believe what I did to my boat today. It makes me nausiated everytime I look at it. I don't know if it's because of the way I had to destroy it, or the pricetag that's coming along with this job.

The ol' coonass at the fiberglass shop told me, Dusky makes boats like 1st graders. He is going to fix my boat for me, so I'll be out of commission for the next 3 weeks.

Here are the pics.

Rip up the floor and add a stringer where Dusky should have already had one on each side. Then since they have no imagination, add an under the floor fish box. After that fix the bottom where it is all de-laminating.

I would have gotten rid of the boat, but boats aren't selling, and I'll probably spend the same amount fixing someone elses piece of shit.

Do you think she will be ready to go for the trip on the 10th? I'm about ready to put a shaft through something.

Re: Dusky Project

The fiberglass guy told me 3 weeks, I will have the boat to him today. I have been thinking about you guys, I still have the email saved. I couldn't with a right mind take you out in it after I discovered the problem with the bottom.

Let's try to stay in contact via email.

Re: Dusky Project

More pictures that I took this morning.

I may just fill in that hole in the center, put a tiller arm on the motor for steering and run it like a flatboat. Just think of the room we'd have.

Re: Dusky Project

OH boy Rok, you got you a project now. Lancaster said it best when he told me "you know, all you have to do is tear apart one thing on a boat and it becomes an entire restoration project. You find a little rot here, and go to remove it, find more, then you won't be able to sleep at night knowing your boat may have more, so you rip everything out. Sometimes its better not knowing as long as it works."

It wasn't working, I was bildging after every rig, the bottom was delaminating. The last part that cracked was about 3' long.

I just couldn't get past the idea of having to swim to the nearest platform once we sank.

As it is, I already tell everyone who gets on any boat I own,

"If we sink, I'm not responsible for your dive gear".

Re: Dusky Project

Now we have the floor out, basically we don't have any rot. Dusky didn't put any transverse supports between the stringers and the outside wall of the hull. The hull then flexed and cracked. Over on the Dusky forum there are a bunch of followers that can't imagine their favorite manufacturer being wrong, but they are.

I called Dusky today, asked for the owner, they put me through to some guy whose job is to tell people "NO"! Dusky isn't responsible for the boat if you didn't buy it directly from them, there goes the resale value.

If anyone wants to read the stink on the dusky forum, here is the link, before they delete the entire thread. I already copied the whole thing though. I WILL be a pain in their ass.

Anyway, more pics.

Re: Dusky Project

Don't forget to check the gas tank & any hidden wiring/hoses for chafe while you have easy access to them. Hard to believe there NO bulkheads, but there it is.
