You really found the trigger honey hole!!!

I got back to the happy hunting grounds and was I able to find some fish. I got four days of decent viz in between a dieing south swell and an increasing hurricane Dora swell.
A couple of highlights...
Just before I was distracted by a school of gafftopsail pompanos, I saw a group of four 20lb roosters. I saw them in the distance and they left quickly. I went after the pompanos and while I was stringing one up, here come the roosters, except there were about thirty of them. They buzzed me so close that their vortex like wake almost spun me around. Slight exageration,,,,but they were close.
The big eyed jack I got out of a big school that circled me. It can be challenging trying to pick a fish out of a circling school without wrapping yourself up in your own float line.

Re: cabo in shore report

I was there toward the end of July (17-28) and got blasted by bad visibility everyday for 2 weeks from shore spots (mostly on east cape miles from Cabo)...It must have been because of the hurricane that passed by during my visit...winds or currents pushing crap making cloudy waters etc..The best thing that came out of that trip is my son shot his first fish in Baja and we found a huge virgin reef that appears to be accessible only by boat...We had to break some trespassing rules to figure out how to get to it..Once figured,we got out of the restricted property, went around it and swam to the spot full of game. Just could barely see a damn thing. This was the first time diving from shore in Baja I got vis this bad...Usually excellent...

Funny thing is my son and I dive near the arch (no spearing allowed) the last 3 days of our visit..Fish all over the place!..huge parrot, huge leopard grouper etc...were crying..Visability was excellent. I wish we could have went around the corner and dove the pacific side but the water conditions were too crazy...I hear the pacific is divable during the winter months..

Re: cabo in shore report

Congrats on the first fish. I forgot how tastey greybar grunts are. First time I took one I thought it was a pargo. Had to take one again. I also found a small barred pargo hiding in the rocks close to shore. Conditions on the Pacific have been nice with clear water. Air and water are about the same, upper 70's.
Not a lot of action over summer, lots of parrots, triggers, other reef fish and some pargitos. The Pacific cleaned up nicely during fall.

Re: cabo in shore report

Going to be in Cabo in the end of Feb begining of March. Going to be down by the arch for a week then going north to spear with a friend in Los Barrilles area. Where is there to spear will I am down in Cabo? I understand there is no spearing in the bay, but are there any spots nearby? Or where does the protected area end? Cant get to far away from my wife during the portion of the trip that I am in Cabo. Thanks for the help in advance!

.

There is plenty of spearing outside of the protected bay of Cabo. The bay of Cabo San Lucas is fairly small. There are miles of beaches and bays on either side.

Re: cabo in shore report

What are the rules for shore diving in beach areas in Mexico? Can I just jump right in and swim out or is there restrictions?

Re: cabo in shore report

Yes, you can pretty much jump in anywhere and spear as long as you have your mexican fishing license. The farther out of town you are, the less likely you'll be asked for it. There are fish limits also. Basically 10 fish per day, 5 of one species. Some fish like a dorado or a marlin are equal to more than one fish.
Some nice beaches close to town and easy to get to are Las Viudas, Santa Maria and Chileno. You might want to bring the wife, good whale watching at that time.

If you came up here I would show you where to shoot some big Pike. I wasn't asking for your secrets, just to be pointed in a direction. And he does seem to be a nice guy.
