Large Oarfish found in La Jolla Cove on 8/14/24
...Divers found a deceased oarfish in the cove. It is about the 20th time one has surfaced, based on known sightings. It measured 12' and will be examined in an attempt to determine cause of death..
...In the 70's, I caught a living four-foot long oarfish while free diving off Long Point, Catalina. A predator had bit off 6" of it's tail. It died a short time later while placed in a tub of saltwater. It rapidly became a shrunken mummy in my freezer... ... Baby oarfish have been sighted in several west end coves at Catalina, indicating a resident population down deep. Am still looking for that 35' world record oarfish to mount and hang on the wife's living room wall.... |
