cabo in shore report
When I went to bed last night it was windy. Thinking it was the dreaded gulf wind, I was having second thoughts about getting in an early dive. I woke up to no wind. Got onto spearboard and watched Searen's video. That was all I needed to push me out the door. I went down to a friends house that's on the beach. I was greeted with another lovely cabo morning. Air temps are lo's in the mid 60's, hi's are in the lo 80's. The water temp is in the mid to upper 70's.
The visibility was pretty clear. The first thing I see in the water are lots of sardines and then a school of really small roosterfish swim by. Then I see a school of Jack crevalles in about the ten to fifteen pound range. I'm starting to get psyched, however, I swam around for about another hour and only an occasional small sierra or two would swim by. I took three shots and wiffed them all. I also saw a couple of cabrilla's, maybe in the ten pound range, but I couldn't get a shot off. I did manage to get one cabrilla in the pan fryer size. I then swim down to a breakwater in hopes that something will be there. I get there and there's sardines lined up along the rocks. I swim about half way down the breakwater and I see a pargo mixed in with all the other fish. He's right up against the rocks in about five feet of water. I line up the shot and he's waiting for me to take it. A surge of sand comes and it disapears from view. I wait it out and he's still there when the sand settles and I thankfully nail him. Áfter reading a post about the cubera on the east coast, I'm glad their west coast cousins are easier to spear. I was happy to get in and out of the water early and let the fishermen try their luck from the shore the rest of the day. Last edited by stevencabo; 11-30-2008 at 07:15 PM. |

I had some extra time this morning to go on a dive. I've been in the water a couple of times since my last post without seeing anything that was worth spearing. Mostly just small yellow snapper, small cabrilla's and pargos. Since my stock of fish depleted this week I decided to spear whetever small fry presented itself in order to build up my fish stock.
It was a good morning for a dive. Air was in the lo 80's, the water is probably around 77. The visiblity was so-so, clear in some parts and milky in others. I got the tiny pargo right away. As I was out in the water, a guy in an aluminum boat floated by and we had a nice conversation. He was out fishing with his son and also free diving for lobster. He had two in the boat. I kept swimming without seeing anything untill I saw antenas sticking up out of a crack. I fished him out and for down here I think it was a pretty decent lobster. Compared to what other people are posting up on spearboard, I really wonder if mine would even be legal in some parts. I ate them both as soon as I got home so I'm back to square one, no fish in the fridge. |

I ate it whole/entero, and it was good with my survivalist cooking skills. I imagine asian style would spice it up nicely. What would I need?

When the fish is cooked, put it on a plate and add some more fresh thinly sliced green onion, almost a julienne, and the same with the ginger. Take that hot peanut oil/soy sauce and pour it on top of the fresh stuff on the fish and let it crackle over the greens and the skin of the fish. The soy/oil mix will glaze on the fish a bit and will mix with the fish's juices as they run together on the bottom of the plate. You can spoon this over white rice and eat it together with the fish.

I get that feeling just walking down that beach. The owner keeps his house rented out most of the year so he's not down here very often.

Cloudy skies today, air is 79, water 76. The breakwater has been holding a lot of sardines. The pangeros come by to load up on bait. Today was the third time I went to check it out. The first two times I've had pargo and cabrilla sightings, about the same size as the pargo above. I haven't been quick enough with the shot before they duck into a cave. Hoping to find those same fish today, I instead found a sand dab and took the easy shot.

Dios me regaló un bien pescado para navidad. So, I went for an early morning Xmas dive. The tide was high so there was enough water in front of the breakwater to hopefully hold some fish. As I drive into the spot, I see some local fisherman already walking down to the beach. I thought, damn, they're gonna beat me to the spot. By the time I geared up and got down to the beach, the fisherman were throwin their nets to make bait which I thought, perfect, that gives me enough of a head start to beat them down to the breakwater. I get to the breakwater and there are already three more fisherman on the corner of the jetty which was fine, I'll just start at the other end and work my way back.
Another beautifull morning for a dive. The air and water were both about 75. I stick my head under water and it is clear visibility. I make my way over to the rocks and there is no swell which allows to hover inches above the rocks and look down into the different caves and alleyways between the rocks. I keep coming back to this spot because it's full of sardines and I keep getting pargo and cabrilla sightings. So, I'm hovering, looking down in between the rocks and sure enough a pargo, about 15 to 20lbs floats into my view. It must of felt the vibrations of me begining to pull the trigger, because I squeezed, it moved and I missed. I reload and start floating above the rocks again looking for the pargo and all of a sudden a cabrilla pops up out of nowhere and there was no hesitation, I got him. I put the cabrilla onto my line reload to go look for the pargo again and look up to see the fisherman that were making bait earlier, casting their bait. Oh well, I thought, I'll be back. I kicked back to the other end of the breakwater and see the other fisherman hook up to a sand dab in the exact spot where I got mine in my last post. Gracias a Dios I got fish, and enough to make some fish head soup Bulit7 style. |
