All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
Sadly, I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the Gat-Ku. The diameter is a little thin for my tastes and the slant of the spiral grip makes the grip less effective under tension. The longer spears are a bit floppy as well, which can make tracking a moving fish difficult. Those are mostly personal issues though. What really irks me is that you have to add an o-ring in order for the slip tip to stay secure. However, I have to say that the spear is pretty durable so shooting reasonably sized fish in a hole shouldn't cause much of a problem. I also like that they have a flopper option.

keller all the way!
I have both, both are nice spears, and both have their place overall i would rather have the hard hitting brute force of a keller at all times gatku shoots nice and is easy to use but will get thrashed by bigger fish |

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
Get a cheap aluminum spear if it's your first time spearing and you're going for small stuff. There's no sense in buying a top shelf spear when you don't even know what you're looking for, or even if you're going to like spearing.
You don't need the speed of the gat-ku or the power of the keller if you're just dicking around in the shallows for dinner.

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
grab a couple yellow fiberglass spears and a few stinger slip tips. cheap and easy, I use a sling for shallow and smaller fish, and use a crist 8ft spear when hunting deep for big fish

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
The Gat-Ku should work great for his purposes.
Get a single flipper tip. A paralyzer might end up wounding more than you want.

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
I think I recall Linghunt making a threaded adapter for those that could take a 6mm flopper tip.
I also recall seeing one on eBay.

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
My observations, and I have lots of these spears, and been with many using all of them. For many years. The Keller is nice but the front spear/shank is not heat treated , bends easily, and the flopper and pin are the lowest quality in the biz. Slip tip is a tube type which doesnt deploy if there is any side pull. They need work in that department. They did fix the cord which was like cotton. Gat Ku seemed good, but seemed very flexible. Head Hunters are nice and fast, but have too many weak points. O rings, weak cord. But will get the fish, sturdy tips and front spears, fast spears. Most spears you must upgrade some.

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
Steve the Keller has been updated since the one you saw with me last year. That was a proto-type lot of R and D since then. The newest gen 5 slip-tip is solid one piece, and he is using heat treated shafts which are really hard to bend. Also no more cotter pin, it is a grub screw now for the receiver which looks better and easy to change. As far as the slip-tip spectra it is real good now I think over 1000lbs breaking strength, but can use cable too. Also floppers are available. Ill bring the newest generation on next trip to Bahamas we do on you boat. Cant come soon enough!!

Re: Gat-ku or Keller Aquatics?
My review was stated up above. It's been said plenty of times and if you want to be sure youll need more then one spear. I enjoy using my headhunter for smaller quick fish that won't hole up. And fish that will seek structure I pull out my Keller "meat stick" and lay the wood. In most cases the fish I want to eat and hunt enjoy structure. I've had a big (gulf)sheephead split the graphite of my headhunter within the first 2weeks of having it. Then I learned a lesson on how to shoot mangroves in a hole. I find my self constantly babying my headhunter cause I don't want to break it. It can handle a lot and it's a good spear, very fast, plenty of flex for larger open water fish. I'm not worried about my Keller unless the kraken is in a tight hole. Even then, if you have a slip tip your gonna get you spear back....
Just keep in mind what your hunting and go from there.
