Want to make velcro/elastic straps

I hate these rubber straps that come with knives so I'm trying to figure out a way to make either elastic or even better elastic velcro straps so you can just loop, tighten and fasten.

Riffe make something similar (minus the velcro and with a buckle) but for $15 I figure i could make a big batch of the bastards.

Would be nice to make different widths, a nice thick strap for the belt loop and then a 3/4" for the other. My Ipod works much the same way and I can run for hours with that thing on without moving it.

Any ideas, folks?

Re: Want to make velcro/elastic straps

The local fabric shop has different width elastic cord and band, starting at .28/yd, and 1" width band for .56/yd at last check.

It's easy to sew a loop, sew velcro tabs, sew buckles, or just tie a knot to slide the bands on.

Good luck, and don't forget the bungee-loop for your knife handle

Let me know what you come up with Tanc. I'm interested enough to split the cost with you till you hit it big

Old surf leashes. Cut the cord part off and you have a strong Velcro cuff. If you want one to go around your thigh 2 together should work.

This elastic cordage from Mako might help you. It stretches quite a bit. So you could just take two, tie them in a loop that is a snug fit on your arm. Then it just stretches and slides onto your arm or leg. No pulling, tightening or anything needed. And it's lightweight stuff, so I don't think it would be overly tight. Just a thought.

Throw those rubber straps away and get a knife pocket. $20 bucks and you never have to worry about your knife sliding around ever again. Maybe tonight you'll get some sleep

Re: Want to make velcro/elastic straps

Sorry I didnt even read your opening post. I'm just a smart ass. But dude...If you're worried about $15 bucks you're in the wrong sport. I have a pair of those Riffe buckles and you can have them. They work good, but I have knife pockets on all of my suits and would never switch back.

One for every wettie adds up. Personally I'd prefer to have it on my weight belt but John rightly mentioned I wouldn't be able to secure the knife with bungy as there'd be no bottom strap to anchor off.

The great thing with the weight belt is a knife is easily reachable with both hands, off the arm it's impossible and the leg could be a challenge.

My old knife locked into place so losing it was never an issue, alas after 10 good years she's now in knife heaven...

Re: Want to make velcro/elastic straps

Nice looking but remember this is for safety. By the time you get your gloved hand to undo the white elastic cord and then the black rubber loop on top and then get a grip around the knife you may have already passed out and died. Try a wenoka squeeze on your belt and use release weights for other suits.

Re: Want to make velcro/elastic straps

I'd ideally like to wear this knife on my belt but people said without the bungee I'll lose it and without a bottom strap the bungee wont hold it in. Hence why I went to the arm.

I was going to cut the black rubber loop, it's just a pain.

Re: Want to make velcro/elastic straps

Give it up and spring for the Riffe straps. I didn't think they would last long, but I bet I've had a pair about 8 years. Maybe I'll spring for another pair after this summer.

Addressing what Mike said, I have a knife pocket on my thigh, but I also have a knife on my forearm held by Riffe straps.
