attaching line to the rest tab?
Hi there, I’m about to finish a new home built and I faintly remember reading here about attaching the line to the rest tab? What is the benefit of this? It does seem counterintuitive to me… Happy to give it a go though (it’s just a wee 95 reef peashooter)

The first one is that it puts the line away from the rubber band briddle, so getting it tangled is less likely. Important if you use tangling-prone line. Second is that if you happen to put all the shaft through the fish, the whole shaft behaves as a huge slip tip... which might help to land a fish. But of course it comes with a drawback... which is that if you use it for hole hunting... the shaft would be impossible to retrieve if a fish drags it where you cannot reach it. For hole hunting I rather attach the line to the hole at the tail of the shaft. I hope this helps! Mikel |

Re: attaching line to the rest tab?
It reduces the size of the line loop on line or pin wrap muzzles as the spear leaves the gun and the chance of it catching and pulling the shot off course slightly. Not necessarily a problem and unlikely on a short gun. Rollerguns with more bulk at the muzzle due to the nose rollers are more likely to be affected.

Re: attaching line to the rest tab?
I can add that if accuracy and shaft velocity speed is important then the rest tab is the best place to attach line. Not sure what the mechanics are and why that is so, but I guess one reason is that line pulling there acts like feathers on an arrow and stabilizes things.
As Mikel mentioned connecting to the back of the shaft makes sense when hole hunting. But even then I found you could twist the line around the back shark fins and pull to have similar effect. If you hunt in super deep holes then a slotted shaft shaft without sharkfins might be a better choice. Then you would have no choice but to connect to the back of the shaft. Accuracy and shaft velocity are not important factors if shooting in holes. |

cool, makes sense now. I’ll give it a go, my goal is always accuracy, and I’m never hunting in holes. Thank you!
