Am I being PETTY?
Two of my aluminum 72 dive tanks needed Hydro. Because my local dive shop ships tanks out for hydro, the turnaround time was considerable. Therefore I took them to another dive shop that hydros on site. When I picked them up , I was charged for an airfill! Now to hydro my tanks, they were filled to 5000 psi and expansion was measured. Did they drain them down to 0psi and then refill them, or did they drain them down to 3000psi and just double charge for the fill? I didn't say anything but I can't figure it out. I was not charged for the VIP. THANKS FOR YOUR FEEDBACK.

Definitely on site hydro ... no nitrox.... charge for hydro (5000psi), charge for fill (3000psi), yes VIP sticker

Re: Am I being PETTY?
Hydrostatic testing is performed with water in the tank, to the best of my understanding. If you blow a tank up to 5KPSI gas and it explodes, bad news, that's a lot of rapid volume expansion. The news is much less bad if you pump it full of water and then add a little bit more to get to the same PSI. Water doesn't compress much at high pressures.
I usually pay for the hydro, and then a separate price for a VIP that includes the air fill. I think how you're saying you were treated is normal IMHO. Disclaimer, I do not perform hydros, never seen one done, and I am only an electrical engineer, not a mechanical one. Also, "hydro" means water, but pneumatic forklift tires can be solid rubber, so you can't ever be quite sure..... Last edited by Tyson Brown; 02-16-2022 at 09:23 PM. |

Hey, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation.

Re: Am I being PETTY?
OK guys, time out. This is the internet. You're not allowed to ask a question, get a reasonable answer, then accept it with gratitude.
SCUBA, you're supposed to name the dive shop, then call them "thieves," before getting all the facts. Then Tyson is supposed to call SCUBA an idiot when he posts his explanation. Then SCUBA is supposed to talk about how he trains jiu jitsu, etc. This is the nineties. Get with the times. |

Re: Am I being PETTY?
How much was the Hydro and Air Fill out the door? I believe I just paid $55 for a Hydro/VIP/Air Fill. Cheers, Kadman

Re: Am I being PETTY?
I think $36 is more than reasonable. Especially, with the VIP sticker.
Keep posting your videos. They provide inspiration to get in the water. Love the Halibut footage. Cheers, Kadman |

Re: Am I being PETTY?
$36 is pretty good. I have been thinking about asking for a bulk price of maybe 10 tanks and doing …$350?
Am I crazy? There is a hydro shop in Camarillo
