gun cross section

Hello everyone ,

longtime since I built my last gun before the Covid19 ,going back to our favorite sport so I am building a new gun for a 150 cm spear ,gun have an oval Cross section ( Makorea wood ), the length between rubber slot to trigger hole is 110 cm , minimum measured thickness 3.3 cm & width 4.5 cm ,that narrower cross section starting from muzzle and extend 20 cm toward the middle of the gun , more wood in the middle ,Is it possible that wood could deflect if I use 3 regular rubber 14 stretch to 330% ?or even break ?

Re: gun cross section

I did the same thing on this build I'm currently working on and had the same fears- shaping the muzzle/ band risers like that makes for a very small knuckle of wood left in the upper rear corner- right where all that force is going to be applied with the bands loaded. I ended up implementing a novel idea ( at least I haven't run across anyone else doing it)- I sleeved the inside of the muzzle with a sheet of high grade stainless steel and epoxied it into place. I located the seam in the front of the muzzle. The reasoning was to use the sleeve to distribute the load at the knuckle throughout the entire muzzle area. I am still working on the build and haven't tested the whole idea out yet, but it seems like it should solve the potential problem. Anyways that's what I did.

I don't think you are going to have any problem with that build. If you still have doubts about the integrity of that area, skin it with a couple layers of CF. Besides the mandatory bling, you will add a lot of strength to it. I think it is a better idea than stainless steel, as it bonds much better to the wood underneath, can be sanded and the transitions smoothed no problem... and weights a lot less.
