Lightbulb Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!

Lookin into killing my first yellow with a spear. What size bands would you recommend? How many? I have a cressi Comanche 110 that does work on smaller reef fish but how would it handle a yellow? What size spear would be good? Basically just lookin to see if my set up is ready! Thanks!

Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!

110 could probably take some curious YT if they came into range, but most people would tell you to get something in the 140cm range or larger.

I use a 55" Koah that is a laser and I love it. A lot of other people use 55" Wongs, both are about 140cm in comparison.

Others will show you a 4x4 plant with 7 bands and a I beam for a shaft, and tell you thats the best solution because you can kill shot stuff from 45 ft away

I think a 55" gun (140cm) is perfect for YT. It gives you plenty of range, while staying nimble and easy to swing in the water.

a 140cm pipegun is cm +Handle and muzzle. a 55" wood gun is 55" of wood.

Exceptions are JBL, Ulusub and some others.

Single band on that gun is going to give you an effective range of about 8 ft. If you did get a shot at a YT it would probably be out of range, or you wouldn't get full penetration and it would just injure the fish.

Do you use a reel or float line? A 20lb fish could drowned you / take your gun pretty easy if all your using is a single wrap of shooting line.

Sounds like you need a bigger gun / different setup if your going to go after YT / WSB

Should I go dual band and upgrade to a 7.5mm shaft?

Your not going to be able to do much with your setup.Btw it is an 18mm.I would buy a rob allen 110 and sell your comanche.Either the rob allen or a mako oceanic pro 110.You can do alot more with those. If you wanted to setup your comanche you would have to buy a new muzzle which is a pita.

Why? What about a RA or Mako 110 makes it more suitable for YT? Why does he need a new muzzle?

Because the comanche muzzle only has one band hole.

You should take another look.

Jeremy, your comanche comes with a relatively thin shaft (6-6.5mm) and they don't have extended shaft guides (rail) all along the barrel. If over powered with 2 bands, the shaft will most likely "whip" and loose accuracy. I'm not even sure if the barrel was designed for two bands, not to mention the trigger mech. If you get a thicker shaft, say 7mm and uses 1 20mm band you should be ok, as long as you get close enough.

You should try a "search". Your question has been asked a dozen times this summer. Here's a recent discussion...
