Help a beginner out in LA area?

I'm in Pasadena for the summer and am looking to learn how to spear. I'll bring gasoline and post dive beers in exchange for someone to show me the ropes! I'm an experienced scuba diver and have done a little free diving.

Re: Help a beginner out in LA area?

If you are confident enough to go out from shore yourself start looking for shore access locations and work your way up or down the coast. Good things will happen to those who spend time in the water.

My advice is a gun no larger than 120cm...with a reel. Several local dive companies sell small inflatable brightly colored safety tubes and taking one of these to mark where your gun is when you go following your line through the kelp is nice as well.

Watch wind, swell, and tides.

Best of luck. I would dive with you if I was still in the area. Plenty of good fishing to be had.

Winter camping on catalina is also a blast and you will have the place to yourself.

Please reach out to the LA Fathomiers.

Check their website out, attend a meeting and meet dozens of young and enthusiastic spearos that will dive with you. It’s a good club too.

Best of luck.
