Pushing longliners out to 300 feet or deeper "is kind of a temporary stopgap measure," said council member Roy Crabtree, who is also regional administrator for the National Marine Fisheries Service. "We couldn't come up with anything else to do in short term."
Here's a solution Roy, ELIMINATE longlining period.

Banning gear types sets a very dangerous precedent. I hope we do not end up in their cross hairs down the road.

It's only a matter of time. The question will be how much of an impact we have when it does. My .02 - The grouper population will be just fine with me taking my recreational 2 fish the 5 times weather cooperates and I have time to get out in a year.

there is no sea turtle bycatch with spearfishing and there is plenty of video of commercial spearos that shows how precise and efficient they are. besides certain trapping methods, spearing is probably the most selective and sustainable method of take. with hook and line there is a significant amount of bycatch as well as lots of lead and mono left on the bottom. no one is going to go after hook and line anytime soon. as long as we continue to be good ambassadors of spearing i don't think we have anything to fear. the whole key is that we all remain proactive in the protection and promotion of spearing.

Obviously this decision will put many fishermen out of business. OTOH it is about time these fishermen find a new better safer method of catching fish.

I support longlining, just as long as it is restricted to only be legal within 20 miles of the Somalian coastline.
