Dive Report from Catalina Sat/Sun
Beautiful calm conditions with outstanding visibility over the weekend at Catalina. The bugs were back in their holes for the most part. The rocky reefs now devoid of kelp are sporting that invasive seaweed called Sargassam Horneri. My son was fighting it on every dive. Some areas the Sargassam is so thick you can not navigate through it at all without a major hassle. It is sad to see this transformation of our dive spots getting worse every winter.
The nice part is that we ended up with a nice haul on the lobster for three divers. The Calico Bass seemed to be much lighter in their skin color taking on a whitish appearance with the molted black spots. I am wondering if this is due to the lack of Kelp and now they are trying to blend in with the color of the rock formations. I was surprised to have big fish dart out of the rocks while looking for antennae. We could not have asked for a better crossing coming home in lake like conditions. |
