La Jolla Cove Reserve Report

I took my inflatable out with my wife and a friend. They wanted to snorkel, so I treat them with a little trip to the kelp. No guns, no poles, just freediving and snorkeling. Vis was 10 to 12 but pretty hazy. Water temp was confy with the thermo at 25. Of course I saw some good size calicos, the typical Opal Eye and what it looked like a 7 gill, I said nothing to keep the girls calm.

I decided to get out of there just incase and go in to the reserve. We drop the anchor and swam to where everyone goes snorkeling. It was packed.

The fish love it there, they have no fear since no one can touch them. I saw some Huuuuge Calicos and the biggest Sargo I ever seen. The fish could not care less about the people swimming all over. I dropped on this big Calico and it was not moving so I could not resist, I reached out with both hands quickly and grab him I let him go and he took of.

Living here for so many year I never gone for a swim there. It was a good time. Good place to take the family and friends from out of town.

We are lucky we live here.

I dive the canyon at the shores on scuba for an occasional night dive and its the only place I ever really see halibut big fatties easily up to 20 to 30 lbs.

Re: La Jolla Cove Reserve Report

I went out with a good friend and we both saw massive calicos and even found a couple of abs! Lobsters in every nook and cranny we looked in. Fun dive but it sucked because the fish know where they are protected..

Re: La Jolla Cove Reserve Report

Glad you had a good time! I have had some awesome experiences there over the past several years. On one occasion, I even saw a sea turtle in-between the cove and the shores.

Every beach could be this amazing if we closed it to fishing.

Actually it's not that amazing. If you're over in the cove side of things, there's a lot of critters there, but if you cruise over to the shores side, other than the leopard sharks, (which are there not because it's a reserve and quite simply could have chosen any other beach and were there before it was a reserve) there is really no more fish there than at any other beach. If you dive Del Mar, there's just as many Croakers, Corbina, Guitarfish etc there as there are here.

Re: La Jolla Cove Reserve Report

La Jolla cove is a fun dive/snorkel with lots a "No Fear" fish to see for those that don't get in the water much I think the best snorkeling there though is out in front of the caves just north of the cove in between LJ shores and the cove, Lobsters every where, with a bigger verity of fish.

NOT SO MUCH...only parts of the cove have any life, marine room is packed full of life because of the habitat, but if you go 50 yards in the wrong direction, its a desert...parts of Del Mar have just the same excitement.. But marine room has the easy access.. I've even seen horn and swell shark egg casings in the surfgrass..really cool stuff. That reserve gets more life because it's soo close to a really big trench, which brings in all kinds of stuff. But like Al said, it just happens to be a reserve.
