You need to read more and also dive more. As in a LOT more.

I'm a pimp for the older, pre JBL's when they were marketed as Voit and SwimMaster. The Custom or 4G32 has brought more poundage out of the holes than all my other 10-12 guns combined. A very simple and foolproof rig- two 5/8 bands with a single wrap and it's dinner.

Like everything else developed in the late 70's and 80's quality control took a puke, but the JBL's always stood up to anything that I threw at them on the bottom and the rigs. While they have a long way to go as far as blue water, the bulk of their line is fine for 85% of the clowns here.

You always tell everyone to go with a Mako and that's fine, they have a nice gun line as proven by the other labels they are sold under. The thing that's lacking in your assertions is actual experience. So go dive and get back to us in a couple years.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

Sorry Sven,
I agree with you on the older guns(I still have several Voit guns) but the straw that broke the proverbial back for me is the trigger, mis-fires, and their dogged determination not to do a damn thing about it. Every gun has it's applications. I have always said "To each his own" about the JBL's. If they just would have fixed the Damn triggers. I won't even mention the pot metal muzzles that broke when you fired the gun if the wishbone slapped it. I just can't abide a weapon that fires unexpectedly. A little customer service would have gone a long way, but that bit too. I really hope the present owner turns it all around, but pretty pics in a catalog and verbose gun descriptions are not enough. I will give them one thing. In the right hands, they are deadly close range rig guns. Outside of 12 feet, I think I'd rather throw the spear. At least I know when I'm letting it go.

Are you talking to me or someone else? It's kind of hard to tell when you don't quote who you're referring to since your post followed Ethan's. If you are directing your comments at me I'm 24, so the kid comment doesn't apply really and the last couple lines of your post are slightly confusing. If you weren't though, just disregard this.

In reference to SafariTom: Why do you think I keep attacking you personally? I never called you a noob. My comments were towards woodpro about the noobs. To reiterate, we recently had a rash of noob threads and posts in my region which asked the same questions that have been asked before not to mention their attitudes were less then savory. I understand we were all new at some point, however this is no excuse for not searching. If you care to look at the very first thread I ever made here I blatantly mention that I will search as much as possible before making threads.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

Jbls work fine when you are in dirty water or shooting close. There is no need for a really accurate, long range and balanced gun. Ive shot a ton of cobia, sheepshead with jbl comp magnum. Most of my shots were close and the shaft diameter is huge so penetration was no problem.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

For many years the only guns I used were ABBILLER and JBL (only thing available locally). It was either that or the little Cressi Subs with very thin shafts. Since we used our guns a lot in the oil rigs the little Cressi Subs were useless since those little shafts would not last one fish and you couldn't reliably rig thick kevlar line on it. Man we took down tons and tons of fish. A couple of years ago we got Riffe locally and that simply changed everything. All the problems with ABBILLER and JBL using slide rings and dangerous metal wishbones were gone.. I don't think I will ever go back.

However I recently saw some new JBL wood guns and they had changed dramatically. Gone was the slide ring and steel wishbones, they now have finned tabs. That is a huge improvement to our older XHD magnums. ABBILLER has still not seen the light and have the same design as they did 18 years ago when we got our first ABBILLER gun. So to be happy with that gun I would basically have to do a Riffe style modification just like JBL did.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

Go with the Sawed Off Magnum ... Here is why

I purchased this gun and it turned out to be on BackOrder.. JblHunter got it to me within a couple days of notifying him !

I recieved the gun and started diving. Ive had it out maybe 10 times and It kills fish NO PROBLEM. Ive been diving in cruddy water water in and around Sarasota Bay. Mostly close range stuff. I took down a near 30lb monster gag with it but i was only about 4 ft away. I have taken snapper from 5-8ft .... I just havnt had the viz for longer shots Here are the Pros
1. Its beautiful
2. It takes 3 bands
3. Super smoothe easy trigger mech
4. Feels great in hand, perfectly balanced and floats after firing
5. Its fast and responsive
6. Line mechanics are great and well placed

Cons
The only con i have with this gun is loading the shaft. You really have to push it hard to get it to lock in. Not sure if this is a bad thing..

I would recommend this gun with two big thumbs up.

So many are so quick to say they suck but why? My AB Biller trigger feels like my fingers are splintering when i squeeze it...

I mean come on guys ... A gun really is a simple machine... Its not rocket science. Its a piece of strait wood with rubber bands and a projectile with a trigger mech. What exacty is so much better from another brand? Is it the wood? doubtful... probably all came from the same trees, the bands? unlikely .. the muzzle? hmm.. not to complex , maybe its the trigger mech? Well... they all handle about the same... perhaps some last longer than others..

Just because you love your brand doesnt mean you should slam the other. JBL has changed a flawed trigger mech as well as a few other specs. Perhaps they were not as stand up as they are now but from what I have seen its a huge step in the right direction. Ill gladly endorse them and until I have a problem, will continue to do so. And I will probably endorse them even if I have a problem. This isnt a perfect world. Sh&* happens. JBL isnt he first company to have a trigger jam or get stiff.

"JBL is old antiquated shit"? And you say "any spearo who is half smart" ?? I guess Im not half smart in your opinion...? Watch who your slamming cus it may come back to haunt you ... Big mouths like you should stay off the board.

maybe people who cant shoot need perfect expensive guns....

if you love your gun or your gun company thats great!.. Just dont slander another ...
One more thing ... Ive never been "into" equipment. If i have a gun and the ability to bring home dinner, then I am quite content. For example, I also play acoustic guitar , ive been playing for almost 20 years. i am CLUELESS when it come to guitars.. i dont know anything about all the brands, makes and models... but if you give me any guitar that will tune, i can play it and make sweet music. I believe its the same with spearing... anyone heard of a supercarbine? Ive killed a LOT of fish with that cheap, ugly, weak busted up speargun.
Its not the tool that makes the master. Its the master that uses the tool. and you can quote ME on that.
I totally agree with you on this one Tom. Everyone is going to love their own choice of gun more than others. What it really comes down to its how versatile and skilled the spear fisherman truly is. I use a Euro gun, Sporasub Aspic 90cm, and I have had no problems. At the same time, others say Euro guns are nightmares. My cousin uses a normal banded gun and we kill about the same amount of fish. Like I said before, its not so much the brand of the gun, its the skill and preference of the user. Let me know how that JBL works! Hope it's everything you wanted of it.
