Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

What the Rok said!

Another vote for the Jae Bee Ells, Steele Buckholtz shot the Texas State record amberjack with a JBL Gulf Magnum.

The first time I went spearfishing with Steele I borrowed his Gulf Mag and for my reach it was better than the 450 I had, I have put down some serious fish with that gun. Never once bent a shaft either.

Side note, I actually break my trigger mechs down from time to time and clean them out, spray them with some Teflon protectant then close em up. Been using them for 4 years and anytime someone asks what gun they should get for diving the rigs, I recommend the Gulf Magnum... it's just a badass gun. I also have a Riffe 120 Euro with a reel that I like to use for freediving, shoots laser straight. I've also made a gun as well.

I'd like to see you stand on the business end of my gun and tell me it's a POS!

But your last post was a bit more accurate, I love the JBL's for my neck of the woods, it just works... everytime. You have to consider what you are shooting and the conditions your shooting in (location/structure/snags/depth...etc). Use the appropriate gun for the task at hand.

But my half brained opinion is that there is nothing wrong at all with JBL's, at least the Magnum XHD series, never shot a woody.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

I myself have found nothing wrong with JBL. I have been using my magnum for the past 10-11yrs with no problems. The only thing I have had to replace were bands and spear tips. I just purchased a RA 1100, but not because the JBL broke. I just wanted something with a smaller dia. shaft, and after so many years with one gun, I wanted to try something different. But, believe me, my JBL will not be collecting dust, I will still be using it from time to time. Good luck with your purchase.

Wow, never bent a JBL shaft! That definitely puts things in perspective for me.

BTW, the wood guns with the plastic handles were not made well.

How did you research? I went to their site and it's got lots of pretty pictures but no detail. Which gun did you choose? How long is it, what bands does it use and what shaft does it shoot? I couldn't find the specs, I hope you did. The elite series looks promising but hard to tell from their own website.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

The old JBLs are great for killing shitpiles of big fish on Oil Rigs. The short ones are also excellent in low vis situations. They are not a good choice for freediving clear water, or stalking spooky fish that require long shots.

I would love to hear some unbiased reports from actual testing of the new guns from JBL.

Last weekend I passed up my Wong and my homemade guns for a JBL sawed-off. Freediving rigs for Mangroves in moderate visibility. In that situation, it puts more meat in the box. Every gun has it's place.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

I haven't used the JBL's so I'm not going to jump to any conclusions about their quality. I have, however used a Mako and love it, and I can tell you that even if the quality is borderline between JBL and Mako (which is not the case from what I've heard) I would still buy a Mako even it were more expensive just because of all of the over-the-top stories I have heard about their customer service, and now, my own experience with their customer service proving everything I've heard.
Not saying your guns is a POS, just saying you might consider giving Dano a call and talking to him about it and see if he has a better deal for you.

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

Ive sold all my JBL's except one because noone will buy it. Compared to my Mako, the JBL is loud and misfired twice. It offers no advantage such as dynema shooting line for finger saftey. A modern gun is easier to use, more power, less noise and for me at least makes the sport more fun.

PS I will give you a smoking deal on my 90cm JBL comp mag with its massive unbendable spear and rotating bladed super tip

IMHO It's actually not a bad series and it has increased my opinion of JBL guns.

Thanks,
Mike.
If thats what is going on they should take back the piece of shit .38 I bought this year, used about 10 times before the spear fell off the gun and I just upgraded to a riffe. They should give me one of the new ones

Re: JBL - JBL Hunter - New Guns

The reason I don't care for JBL is purely and simply one reason. Safety! In my 30 plus years of spearfishing I have seen far too many JBL's mis-fire. I will not use a gun that may fire itself at any time with no warning or secondarily , lock up and not fire at all. I have a good number of friends that used to use JBL before they had exposure to anything else and once they used a Riffe, Wong, etc., the JBL got left in the garage. The trigger mech is flawed. End of story. A great number of people who spearfish in the Gulf use JBLs and that's their business. If they love the gun, great. I find it kind of funny that earlier this year, when JBL was about to release the "new guns" they had issues with a trigger mech that fired all by itself. Ah. well, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."
