Lobster Essentials
As the water cools down in Socal (weekend reports had SB at 62f!) and the yellows start to thin out now's a great time to focus on bugs.
If you haven't been lobster diving before there a few essential pieces of equipment. First is a Lobster License which you can obtain HERE. It's important you remain diligent with filling out the card. Not only is the information useful to the DFG but it'll also keep you on the right side of the law. Now you'll need a lobster gauge, dive bag and flashlight. You can you can pick up free gauges at most fish and tackle stores but we've also got these cool Neptonics Gauges that double as a beer opener. We're a big fan of the Neptonics Dive Bag, the bag features a tough PVC coated stainless steel frame, along with a sturdy mesh net. Most importantly you'll need a powerful flashlight like the Neptonics 860 Lumen Dive light which is made from Solid Aluminum this 860 Lumen LED Dive Light is compact & powerful. The lifetime LED bulb produces a bright white light. Waterproof to 328 feet. Compact size at only 5 inches long. Finally a good pair of sturdy gloves like our Salvimar Kevlar gloves to handle those bugs and you're on your way! For the new divers our there what tips do some of the more seasoned divers have on landing your first bug? And what are some of your favorite memories?

Re: Lobster Essentials
This is my first season and what I learned most of all is to be aggressive and anticipate their movements. Haha still haven't got a keeper yet, so there's that.

Re: Lobster Essentials
I can vouch for their light, it's very solid, great size, and pretty bright. A friend dropped mine (while turned off) a couple of days ago. It's gone forever. I'll be ordering another. I also got their Large bag. It's huge. I would love it if I could get that much lobster... but, the smaller size is would be more practical. FYI the gauge doesn't come with a lanyard like in the picture.

Re: Lobster Essentials
Why don't you just spend the 4 dollars to get a gauge? Seems like you'd be spending more money on gas trying to find a free gauge.

By the ways i have always enjoyed the Neptonics products. Good value, good quality, creative designs, good service. They fixed my floatline at a fair price. The lobster bag design though is not my favorite, like all bags of that kind they catch on the reef from time to time. I wish they would make a version of the R.A bag.. |

It costs me less than $0.15 per gauge to make myself and I give them out for free to dive buddies and other spearos. As of now I've made six gauges, and only kept two. I still have enough material to make 10+ gauges from 6061-T6 sheets. Keeping the DIY spirit strong. IMHO if I had to buy one, I'd rather buy a neptonics gauge than a cheaply stamped made in China gauge. Last edited by Ren; 11-12-2015 at 06:40 PM. |
