Viz Updates - Oregon Coast

Hi Oregon spearos,

To be more specific geographically, launching this perma-thread just for Oregon coastal waters from Columbia river south to Calif. (fresh water carp'ing reports is good too.) If someone wants to start a WA thread, that would be cool.

I'd also like to start a 2nd Oregon-specific thread toward a group effort to develop our knowledgebase on Oregon coast viz predictors. Such as:

o periods of low absolute tidal exchanges, especially for BV
o periods of low wave-energy ratings as seen on surf-forecast.com, i.e. less shore bottom churn, less crap in the water
o periods when the Columbia river plume is NOT swept southward
... see the other thread for more

#### and the inaugural viz report is for Tolovana, as of 7/26/14 Saturday, via phone call from Tomo.... the viz is utter crap, measured in inches not feet. ###

Re: Viz Updates - Oregon Coast

From Tomo: 7/26 : Well, it's a beautiful day! Made a run to the shore this morn, and turned right around and came back. The water had kind of a "cocoa-infused" look. Went out on the rocks to get a closer look, and passed a tide pool maybe 20" deep that was hard to spot bottom. Bad sign. Once again , lots of dories. Went out on a high lookout and the color appeared uniform to the far horizon. We bailed ,instead of the usual activities, to avoid the Saturday summer crush. Good luck to all!

Tom suggested that BV can be better than PC, and it was. I went to BV also today, and got viz about 6 ft or so... enough to slay some RF's and (miss one Ling darn it). The wave-energy rating for the westerly swell was only 50 or so, so it was almost pond-like. I noticed that the shore churn getting blown south from the beach to the north was getting swept past the opening of the jetty and getting sucked in with the flood or viz would have been even better. I have a suspicion that the Columbia plume was farther out and looped in closer to points south.
