Re: Is it safe spearfishing Santa Barbara/Malibu after 5 straight days of rain?
Lol that sucks you got staph on your face
I've gotten it twice from diving Both times about an inch away from my wiener Exact same spot twice in like 2 years Going to be funny explaining that that scar isn't herpes or anything down the road

Haha that's going to be a awkward conversation! Staple that man card to your chest.

I'm glad that I read this thread. I had no idea. Thanks for everyone sharing those actual cases. I won't be shore diving for a bit.

Re: Is it safe spearfishing Santa Barbara/Malibu after 5 straight days of rain?
I would not dive.
I see from you avatar that you list Ventura as one of your locations. In the early 90’s I would surf the Santa Clara River mouth, and at the time it was known as “Star Bar.” As a grom the waves were too good to pass up. The river spewed toxic water for months. After a rain session, I got out and within an hour, I had hives and was projectile vomiting. I also had Leukemia when I was 21 and contribute some of the probability of getting the disease to the exposure I received from the many years of surfing in contaminated water. |

I surf and dive after Rain, during Rain. No problems yet. Knock on wood.

I was told that 10 days after rain is a good wait time. That sound right?

The fact that our state cut about all resources for water testing makes it that much more of a guess. "Recommended" wait is 72 hours and I can argue that is a completely arbitrary number. Could it be okay earlier at certain spots yes, could it be contaminated for many days after the 72 mark.. yes |

If you have to ask, you know the answer.

Re: Is it safe spearfishing Santa Barbara/Malibu after 5 straight days of rain?
Stay out of the water. Its safe to go again when you see me crawling out of the surf with a sea bass.
Here is a story for everyone, to prove how stupid I am... A couple years ago it rained REAL GOOD, and Malibu Creek turned pretty nutty. Im calling it class 3 rapids at some parts. SO me and my buddies Tyler and Graham decided its time to go whitewater boogie boarding. Equipped with 4/3s and our shredsticks of choice (no leashes, we figured they could get us hung and drown us) we braved the creek. We dropped his car at Guidos, took off through the canyon, and put in at Piuma. Someone told us we would get staff in our eyes and poop liquid for years, so we pre-gamed with the leftover antibiotics I had in my pantry. Rain was coming down hard, and the canyon was straight flooding. We managed to avoid the waterfall (its seriously over a hundred feet) and made it out after dark. It was straight up wicked, we praised Jesus that we made it out of there. None of us got staff. No one got sick. Call us idiots. Call it a case study. |
