Re: Is it safe spearfishing Santa Barbara/Malibu after 5 straight days of rain?

I usually dive rain or shine. I breed reptiles and tarantulas for a living and deal with a lot of shit. I feel like my immune system is bulletproof because of my occupation.

This morning looked like S H I T. It was wickedly calm this evening on my commute home though. It looked very divable.

I dont normally dive in the rain, but thats only cuase the vis noramlly sucks in the rain. If you want to get in, go surfing, theres some good swell in SD right now.

This question get's asked every time it rains... you really are diving in shit water after a rain... some spots are better than others (look for areas that receive less runoff), but I have gotten many sinus infections from diving after a rain. Now I take a thorough shower and spray saline up into my nasal passages after every dive, and I haven't gotten sick since. Still, after this much rain... I have way better things I can do this weekend then dive in shit. http://www.surfline.com/community/wh...ws.cfm?id=1157

The rest of you please all turn in your man cards you wussies.

I would have agreed with you in the past. Until I got a sinus infection from it that spread into my eye and put me in the hospital for 4 days. NOT fun at all...

Bacterial meningitis, hepatitis, respiratory infections, sinus infection, ear infection, flesh eating bacteria. Any of that sound appealing? It's not a man card thing. It should be a natural selection thing.

Re: Is it safe spearfishing Santa Barbara/Malibu after 5 straight days of rain?

As noted before, you won't be able to see anything BUT shit after it's rained like this. But putting that aside, I turned in my "man card" years ago after getting a water-borne staph infection on my face. Yes, that's right, on my FACE. Just a tiny shaving nick turned into something that looked like massive road rash overnight.

I also knew a guy who got infected with the so-called "flesh-eating" bacteria after swimming in some questionable water. He lost a chunk of leg, luckily not a big one.

Five days of run-off doesn't mean the run-off is clean, particularly in areas where it means that septic systems will be overflowing.

In places like Santa Monica Bay what happens is a top layer of fresh water actually just sits there for a few days and further delays the disinfection of the fresh water runoff by salt.

Wish I could say the same about my freezer dude

Mine was a staph infection too. Started in the sinuses, spread into my eye. Spent 4 days in the hospital. Best part. One of the days the nurse walks in and instructs me to sit on the side of the bed and "look left, and DONT look back" she then proceeded to poke at the corner of my eye with a needle to open up the puss pocket that had formed. It was pretty gnarly...

My water-borne staph infection occurred in Santa Barbara so, no, hardly a cesspool.
