Visibility

Besides actually diving on a given lake is there any way to determine if a lake/reservoir/river has good visibility?

Also, does anyone know of any great places near Southern Connecticut.

Re: Visibility

I would look up state regulations on freshwater spearfishing before anything else. After you do that, most spots with workable viz have some kind of mention on a scuba diving directory.

Re: Visibility

talk to the local scuba shops. Never mention you're a freediver (they make no money off you) or a spearfishermen (seems to be a trend against in most shops)

they're usually happy to tell you about the local spots

Re: Visibility

If you have access to the lake. A buddy of mine has a black and white disc on a line. He just submerges it until he looses sight of it, and he has his viz. Sometimes you will have suspended particles at the surface and clear water underneath, so this method is not effective. You can also look at the bank to see how far down you will see. Even satellite pictures might be helpful. If you look at a satellite shot, and see lighter banks, than there is some viz.
Best way to tell is to dive it. Or talk to someone who did.
