NorCal beginner or freshwater locations
Hey, everyone
I recently got my girlfriend her first set-up of equipment for cold water snorkeling and freediving. She is pretty scared right now to go into the ocean and she's not ready to deal with low visibility. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a super chill protected cove or even a nice clear lake or something that I could take her to practice in. We live in San Jose area. Thanks in advance for any info! |

As long as you're not bringing guns to dive with, Lovers Point in Monterey is a nice area for a beginner.

Butterfly has a lot of stuff under 15 ft. Also coral street has good shallow snorkeling in close to shore

Re: NorCal beginner or freshwater locations
I happen to have a friend also new to freediving and wants me to introduce them to the sport. I want to rent them some freedive fins so they can enjoy the experience rather than waste energy using scuba fins. Are there any shops around that will rent these?

Have them focus on proper breathing, and using as little energy as possible to dive and overall just being comfortable. |

Re: NorCal beginner or freshwater locations
All the lakes in and around Santa Clara Co are supposed to be non-contact.....even though you can waterski in them. I've also found most reservoirs to have horrible vis, generally much worse than the coast.
Go to the monterrey peninsula or carmel as others have suggested. |
