And for all of those "speargun only" affictionados out there, I love the speargun too. I'm not against pulling out the gun - especially when my freezer is running low. I'm an avid hunter on land as I much as I am on sea, and I relate polespearing and spearguns to shooting a bow vs a rifle with iron sights.... Big game animals can be taken down with a bow, and big fish with a polespear.... The only difference is the challenge between the two. Bow hunters and polespearos share a love for the hunt and its the thrill of out witting an animals survival instincts with a weapon that brings us back to our ancestral roots.

Here's the real deal with polespears. I'd you're a good enough hunter you can take anything with the pole pretty much. Getting close to fish is essentially where the majority of the skill factors into spearfishing, the better you are the closer you can get. The gear isn't inferior if you can't do the job you as a hunter are. I personally can't kill half the stuff I want to with a pole right now, my skill level isn't there yet but eventually if I can learn and work enough at it, it could be. Some divers in Hawaii who shoot mu with 3 prongs regularly are the perfect example of all this.
