Fiji - Here we come! Anyone there need anything or have any advice?
I'm flipping out! My girl and I just bought tix to Fiji for 4 weeks, flying from LAX in mid February. We're going to surf/snorkel/spearfish our hearts out. Looks like there's plenty of options for budget places to stay thanks to backpackers paving the way. It also looks like most of the country is legal to spearfish, just have to be respectful of the locals' rights and customs.
Questions: 1. Anyone know of somewhere that has good beginner/intermediate surf for my girl (she's decent, but is nervous about the reef factor), that also has real waves for me, and of course has a good setup for spearing some warm water fishies? (sounds like most of the country fits that last requirement) 2. Anyone living over there that needs something? Maybe we can swap for some local knowledge/guide action. 3. Any other tips or advice? Good things to bring for trading that they can't get there? Bula! |

I have a friend that spent 4 months in Fiji. He sailed there from the Marshalls islands I dont have any specific spots or names for you but i'll tell you what he told me. big fish! lot's of trevally's and unfortunately big reef sharks, some of their gear was damaged by the hungry sharks. Good reefs overall!

I'm debating whether or not to take my float and bungee line, or just take 100' of reel line and wrap it around a water bottle just for a failsafe. I'm taking my JBL Travel Magnum and we're trying to travel light. Lines are a pain for me around reefs. The float line and inflatable buoy are pretty bulky, but obviously worth it if I want to go for some big boys. I'm torn...

I found my bouys here. They are bouys left behind commercial tuna boats, and they are everywhere here. I use a strong line bought from the hardware store with my 2 local bouys on the end problem solved for me, now for a big doggie tuna you might need better floats or more of them, for everything else they will do the job.
I think you can find bouys in Fiji. |

Tavaraua is perfect. You will be seeing large numbers of Saqa(trevally), walu(spanish Mackerel), Coral trout, red snapper, and countless numbers of edible reef fish. For surf, your girlfriend can probably surf small restaurants and the rights, while you my friend will be in double overhead cloudbreak and restaurants.
Bula and many vinakas
