Not 3 year old data. We have the technology to do all this. We just need more funding to make it happen even quicker. The result is fish get regulated too late or not enough on old data.
When I had invested my life savings into the IFQ fishery I thought the same way you did. "Things will get better, we just need more data, look at the red snapper fishery, if grouper go that way I'll be sitting on a gold mine!"

What happens when a small time fisherman goes into debt or invests all of his savings into a fishery that gets drastically cut?

You think that the government giving more money to government agencies is going to fix this problem?

Do you think that it is possible that this fisheries destruction is being done on purpose?

Why was this fishery allowed to collapse?

Just curious, how much was that life savings you speak of, when you were 20 years old?

about 100K

I was able to sell the entire comm business for what I put into it. A break even after years of shooting fish with friends and family. It turned out to be a hobby that payed for itself but I was hoping the fishery would get good enough through the IFQ system to allow me to fish full time.

It was the most fun and frustrating job I've ever had.

SeaTux, why don't you stop being a dick and work towards figuring out what is going on. Until the rec and the comm sector join together and fight the corporate takeover of the resource we will continue to see the fishery destroyed.
