Re: What kind of grouper is this?
It sure looks exactly like a Nassau to me. They look exactly like a Red, but have a black square on the top of the caudal peduncal-the area that narrows before the tail. That is the only difference. And I can see the spot in both pics. They are Federaly protected in the US..

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
Not to give you to much of a hard time, or be a dick, but why are you shooting fish if you aren't sure what they are? I understand you are newbie, but you need to learn the fish and know how to ID them, it is part of being a responsible diver. Just from the first two pics it looks like it COULD have been a smaller black, but the third definitely shows it to be a Red.
Congrats on the fish, but definitely work on the ID skills...you don't want to run into an issue of shooting the wrong fish, and definitely want to avoid the shoot first ask questions later mentality. Edit - Just realized there were 4 pages after the first one...gotta keep reading. That said my initial comments hold true, with this addition: Quote:
I think most people here are just saying that that isn't a good practice to get into...especially since a black in the brown phase that is barely legal can also look like a red...and a Nassau that is not vibrantly colored nearly IDENTICAL to a red. Take the comments, learn from it, none of us are trying to deter you from the sport, just trying to make you a better spearo. Good luck!

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
Reds don't usually have a black dot right before the tail do they? I know a Nassau does.

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
I find it funny as hell that even with those joking around over 20 people who replied can't identify the fish.
I'd recommend pulling the post................ Last edited by Gamble; 12-01-2010 at 12:49 PM. |

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
I don't really blame the guy who started the thread. Sure should he have shot a fish he couldn't identify... no, but he's new to the sport and has to learn. The embarrassing part is most of the people who have replied aren't newbies and should have no problem identifying the fish correctly.

Do you feel it necessary to to comment on every post I make?
Why don't you go out and actually shoot something and put up a report. For the record, it's a Nassau. Last edited by Gamble; 12-01-2010 at 04:20 PM. |

Each species shares simmilar body shape traits and can often act in similar manor but folks who have shot both can spot the differences easily.

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
So whats the deal with the black spot and the yellow fin tips? I've never seen a Red with both. The more I edit that pic the more pronounced it gets.
BTW those shorts are dead sexy!!!!! |

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
I cant seem to load any pics from my computer to this page, so I put some pics in My Photos, of Nassau Grouper to show they look exactly like this one. They are in my photos here, under Nassau Grouper all the ones that say polespears under them. If someone can figure out how to get them up on here, do so please. Then maybe you all will finally realize that you are making fools of yourselves. You should learn what fish are legal.
