Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Delayed trip report... but we headed out July 4th to 40' off Anclote. Vis was a hazy 15' horizontal on our first drop then headed 2 miles West to another spot in 40' and had almost ttb vis with 25'horizontal. Found these 2 guys lurking around with some of their friends. Collected some nice hogs and mangos as well.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Clearwater in 50 feet today - viz about 15-20, still a little silty. Temp 89 with a nice little 85 thermocline at 20 feet. Lots of undersize gags. Shot a few smaller hogs, a couple of decent mangos. On one of my nice ledges we got 10 (yes 10) lionfish - never seen so many - and they were BIG suckers.

Oh, and lost my SECOND GoPro today - argh! I think I'll stick to the cheap Chinese knockoffs from now on. If anyone finds one still attached to a head strap, let me know

Dude, holy hell! They might be at the top of the best tasting fish. We had tacos.

I need a pole spear rigged on my gun.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Vis was great on Anclote tug. But sharky. We had encounters with 3 fiesty Bulls sharks. We hit another wreck with average vis and got out when my buddy saw a 10' Mako!

We shot gags, mango, and I had a Mahi tear off in my hands. I saw permit and ARS too.

Vis off Anclote in 40-50 was maybe 15-20 feet. Not very fishy.

Holy crap - a mahi?

Funny - we were joking about sharks just as we arrived to our first spot - we threw the buoy and suddenly a 6-7 foot shark broached right near it, swam around for a while, then dove. Of course, I went right over into the water but never saw it or any others again.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We had pretty much ttb vis in 100' freediving Saturday 7/9 off Boca Grande. Lots of nice mangs and fat yellowtail plus a permit. The GGs were very aggressive with the clear water and were coming up to the chum bag at 50' and waiting for a meal. No thermocline.

23 miles off NPR in 50 fsw. Viz a hazy 15 feet. WTF is up with this viz this year? Luckily no current to speak of.

Got the usual mixed bag of hogfish, some decent mangos, a few spanish macks. I saw no lionfish, but my other divers saw them further south in 50 feet. Gags were all small. No sharks other than one sleeping nurse.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Had almost hazy ttb in 40' off Sarasota Saturday, could see my buddy from the surface just above the reef. Probably about 15' horizontal on the bottom. Lot's of good size mangs, no gags. Saw a cobia but couldn't close the gap with the RA 90cm. A little bumpy on the ride out/in.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out of Clearwater yesterday - 3 spots in 65 foot. Viz was pretty good, I'd say 25 feet or more. Thermocline the bottom 20 feet and hazy at the bottom but still pretty good viz. None of the 3 spots real fishy. Some ok hogs and grouper. Tried 1 spot in 45 feet on the way in. 15 foot viz and hazy. Lot of nice mangroves and a nice male hog. I spent most of time trying to figure out a shot on a 33 inch gag in a hole. I did get him and a nice finish to the day. Seas were a little sporty but not terrible.

Screen capture of second dive of the day for us was even worse... Visual for the viz... :/

Tough to shoot, especially in areas where you're surrounded by bait.

Yeah, was looking over video from yesterday - that damn bait really f-ed things up. I'm still kicking myself over that gag that I thought was a goliath - should have taken the shot - he must have been at least 32 inches, if not larger.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Freedove Monday 7/18 out of Boca Grande. Vis was nearly TTB inshore (depth 30-50ft) then went out into 65-70 after the tide changed and vis in the column was maybe 10' but after the chilly thermocline at 40/45 the bottom had great horizontal vis maybe 30' Super fishy. Chased off of all our spots by sharks. Shot 3 cobia but they broke/tore us off, managed to bag a gag permit and snapper. Here's a clip from 3 weeks ago out of Venice and Boca Grande 3-15 miles out. Super sharky lately, lots of permit though!

We should link up sometime. I Freedive out of Boca pass as well. We are always looking for good divers in the area which are few and far between.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Yesterday 7/25 out of Sarasota vis was probably hazy 40' vertically in 45FSW. Could just make out the shadows of the reef vs the sand from the surface. About 15' horizontal vis on the bottom. Very fishy, managed a few good sized mangs and two gags to 28". After shooting some fish the Goliaths showed, probably 10 or so. Two of which were albino, very bright white. At first I wasn't sure what they were from a distance. Anyone seen these before?
