Moondog Special; My new gun.
My good friend, Doug "Moondog" Jones drove down on Friday from Nor Cal to go out for lobsters and when he arrived, he had a very nice surprise for me; A new custom built gun! Last year doug, a very accomplished gun maker, had made 2 prototypes of a 110 wood Euro gun and he hooked me up with one of them. The gun was deadly accurate and super easy to dive with. With only two bands to load and with a reel the gun was extremely boat/diver friendly. Although I'm not much of a reel guy, I have to admit, it made getting in and out of the water much easier, and it was kinda cool watching line scream off the reel.
Anyways, we both landed a couple of small WSB with our guns and I missed a nicer grade of fish due to being out of range, so I commented to Doug that he should make a longer version of this type of gun. The end result you can see in the pictures. A 125cm wood Euro gun utilizing some of Chris Chaputs' Seasniper innovations. These guns have two 3/4" carbon fiber pipes running the length of the stock which fill with water to create ballast and add rigidity and the band setup is the same as the Seasniper guns. There is what Doug calls a "ghetto" reel due to its inexpensive cost and plastic construction mounted to the gun with the line running down a designated stainless line guide built into the bottom of the gun. The gun has an enclosed track which shoots a 9/16 shaft with a Korf inspired custom made stinger. Doug made the handle custom and water fills from the end of the gun. In pool testing, the gun was accurate to 18 feet. I am looking forward to hunting WSB this spring with gun. If it shoots anything like the smaller version, look out! |

Wow!!! That's awsome! With the water ballasting, closed muzzle, and inline bands, that thing must be a lazer.

Re: Moondog Special; My new gun.
very nice looking gun. don't know how it can power a 9/16" shaft w/ only 2 bands, though.
your gun collection must be taking up WAY too much room now, so i'll be glad to take that 65" sea sniper out of the garage to make more room for your new toy! |

I did some pool testing of these guns with Doug for a few hours when he had first finished them. He's so methodical about it & a perfectionist.
They're really nice guns & they shoot straight as an arrow. |

Man that enclosed track is going to kick ass! I wish Riffe made their Euro with an enclosed track.

Re: Moondog Special; My new gun.
Thanks for the replys guys.
Tommy-glad youre enjoying the mags. Heard of any fish? Tom- I'll let you BORROW the Seasniper anytime you want to come down and dive. Fuzz- yeah, Doug is definately a perfectionist. His gun making skills keep evolving and improving. Ian- I have no frikken idea how he gets those tubes inside the wood! I bought some teak once to try and make a gun and Chris Chaput looked at the wood and laughed. It was all warped with knot holes. Told me to burn it in my fireplace. |

Nice! I doubt that Doug would make anything "ghetto". He is too meticulous.

That thing is Sexy.
I was thinking about building a 140 cm wood euro very similar to that !! I'm sure that thing will be a fish killing machine!!
