Re: internet security

I don't like ANY third party software firewall. I have seen too many get corrupted and hose an OS.

Watch what you click on, enable the firewall in XP, and get a router to put between your PC and the modem, and you should be good.

Excellent advice. Every home should have a router, even if you only have a single computer in the whole house. Get a router.

I have been happy with Zone Alarm Pro, although it has its detractors like the rest of them.

The router pulls the IP address from your ISP and then issues you a non-public IP. If you turn off response to WAN requests and port forwarding, you are pretty much invisible to most hackers. It acts like a cheap hardware firewall, which is fine for most residential users.

I have seen Zone Alarm hose many an OS. This program is for the paranoid people out there.

Re: internet security

I feel like I am being bullied by my security. Like spearboard that I have always clicked onto, now McAfee has a pop up that makes me disable the "privacy" part of the protection in order to get into spearboard. Norton is worse

Re: internet security

Tommy,

As everyone has said, a router between your modem and your computer acts as a hardware firewall so that you don't have to mess with the problems of software.

Of course a Mac helps a bunch because there has not been a single virus written for OS X (so far), but if you don't know no better, you will probably want to stick with your Windoz machine and keep fighting the good fight.

I think this might be hapening because when you subscribe with Mcafee/Norton your trial has been ended with them and they want you to buy their new version of that particular program. I have had this happen with me before. I uninstalled the program and just started using AD-AWARE SE and AVG virus scanner. Hope that might anwser you question or help you out on you computer

Well, I did say "yet."

But that makes one for OS X. How many are there for Windoz?

I am glad to hear about this though. Some one was recently trying to get me to use Instant Messaging. I didn't see any use for it in the first place, and now I damn sure won't use it.

And I will stay behind my router.
