Action in Costa Rica.

First day SFishing with my favorite Cpt and skipper at about 30/ 50 miles off the Pacific coast. Blue water, great visi, sea calm this morning and rough on the afternoon.
Dorado attracted by my home made flasher.
Big eye caught in a little school hidden under an huge spinner dolphin school.
I met 1 SFish + 1 blue marlin swimming together and turning around me. Missed the second because i was distraited by the first wich swimmed between us... life is a joke!

how do you chase marlin?

With all modesty I’m not a reference in marlin spearfishing. I have been meeting soon five and made video by missing the fish…
Specific technics used to catch marlins come from Australia and S.A. Trolling is standart and when the fish swim close to the lure you have to jump… the action is short (10/ 20 sec.) and a little bit stressfull . You have to be overweighet in order to sink fast and to shoot the fish from the bottom up.
I get use to using this technic wich needs a strictly preparation and an experimented team. A little incident with these great pelagics would be serious. But I often jump at the time the fish took off, then by using an (home made) flasher and making some repetitive noise with the bands, It’s surprising but I observed sometime the fish coming back from nowhere and visiting the flasher! The shooting parameters are better. So I caught my best sailfish ( I have been meeting soon about twenty and caught five) : an about 130 lbs and 8' 9'' long.
Marlin behaviour is different than sailfish. Marlin keeps its distance from the diver and swims in a « linear way », but sailfish is more unpredictable. I often observed how they fast swim too close to you then going under your legs wich make the right shot impossible…

To day this tuna capture needed about 2 hours diving. The school was swimming under an huge dolphin school (feeding sardines) and was running very fast, each meeting with the tuna lasts about a couple of min. The dilemma was to dive at about 60 feet and to wait the fish comming from nowhere or to dive quickly when it arrive but then go away...

Pacific Coast/ Nicoya province.
Summer? never be there, I did about ten trips in Winter only (high season for great pelagics) April: high season for yellowfin tuna.

Have you heard anything about the Los Suenos/Jaco area. I'll be down there next month and hear there isn't much diving in that area. I dont need to shoot but it would be cool to get some water time in.

Talk to the owner of the Scuba Dive Center in Herradura (on the right side of the road 1/2mi before Los Suenos entrance). He is Italian, and freedivies/spearfishes himself. He can set you up with a boat, #s, and driver. Most likely he will go with you. 6 hours will cost you around $200-$250.

During two days we got blue/geen water and bad visi. Today: blue water and the best visi++ These tuna were caught at about sixtie miles off the coast. The school was under an huge spotted dolphin school and swimming at about 60 feet so fast that it needed several jumps from the boat. I don't use any chum. The biggest is about 70lbs.
