Vale George Davies Diving Pioneer Australia

George Davies, champion spearfisherman and one of the pioneers of diving has passed on at age 96. A foundation member of the Newcastle Neptunes he has been involved in spearfishing for most of his adult life at all levels and been an organizer of numerous spearfishing competitions and championships.

One of the greats whose name appears in all the history books on the sport, brother of Trevor the inventor of the "Aquamatic" pneumatic speargun who tragically died in a cylinder explosion at an early age, George will be greatly missed as he played a big role in making the sport what it is today and was an influential presence in its development and acceptance when detractors sought to close it down in the formative years.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday next week (11 June 2019) at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

My condolences to family and friends, RIP.

Re: Vale George Davies Diving Pioneer Australia

Here is a scan that George sent me some years ago when I was researching the "Aquamatic" speargun designed and manufactured by his brother Trevor. As you can see it was more than capable of knocking over some big ones! Here you can see George holding the gun, one of the limited number which were made and very powerful with ratchet operated lever loading of the spear.
