Petoskey, MI trip next month - ADVICE NEEDED!
NJ spearo here. Making my way to Petoskey, MI in early September. Any advice for someone who has never speared in freshwater? Should I bring the stubby jetty gun or the rail gun? What kind of species should I expect? How deep will I need to go?
Thanks! |

Re: Petoskey, MI trip next month - ADVICE NEEDED!
Hey man,
Native Michigander here. I use a 90cm in Michigan. The water up around Petoskey is clearer than I usually spear, but also the fish are generally pretty dumb so I don't think you'd need anything longer. Could definitely get away with a stubby too. Species you can legally shoot: carp, catfish, freshwater drum (sheepshead), suckers (don't eat well). Probably won't need to go any deeper than 30 ft. Fish around structure (piers). Happy to answer more questions. Feel free to drop on line on Michigan Freedivers and Spearos on Facebook. |

Thank you, I will! Any other fish that are good eating I might find?

None that are legal to shoot. Only rough fish.
