I just found out that Lotte Hass AND Albert Tillman have passed away this month.
Lotte was one of THE first female divers / model / uw photographers.
Albert was the co founder NAUI

this guy was learned scuba/ spearfishing in the thirties by locals in my native south of France area.

I remember a young and trim Lotte in the TV Dive Adventure programs with Hans, often grabbing a sea turtle and being dragged along for a ride to the surface. She was a real doll and looked great in the dive gear of the day using rebreather technology developed by Draeger. Her book “Girl on the Ocean Floor” is a classic.

Husband Hans Hass passed on some years ago now, they were true pioneers and icons of the sport. RIP Lotte Hass, reunited again with Hans in the Big Reef in the Sky.

Translation of a synopsis of the plot.

Vienna 1950. Lotte Baierl is a pretty young student (Yvonne Catterfeld) whose greatest wish is to become a photo reporter and travel the world-like her idol Hans Hass, the pioneer of the underwater world. When Lotte's boyfriend Gerry recommends her job as a secretary for Hans Hass, she sees her opportunity-and uses it. Quickly, however, their hopes are disappointed. Hass strikes her as a pedantic, cringeworthy person whose principle is never to take a woman aboard an expedition.
But Lotte doesn't give up on her dream: She learns to dive and shoots fascinating photos of the underwater world of the Vienna Danube. Hass is impressed by Lotte's images and falls in love with them. However, do not blame your feelings, but refuse to take Lotte on the dangerous expedition. Lotte is devastated.
But then fate helps. A film producer finds the idea of Hass terrific to be the first to film the white shark underwater. But what if he never gets him in front of the camera? A movie needs the ultimate guarantee for ringing checkouts: A beautiful woman! One like Lotte.

The film producers certainly struck the right note with their casting of the two leads and the authenticity of the dive gear as can be seen in this photo when you compare it with the one above. The iconic Rollei-Marin underwater camera housing for the medium format Rollei f3.5 Twin Lens camera named after Hans Hass. The ne plus ultra for a generation of underwater photographers.
